Music for the weekends

Two different programs are available this weekend to enjoy classical music-one for children and their families and one for adults. On Saturday, October 28 the Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for Kids takes place from 2-3 p.m. This second session of the four-part series provides hands-on experience with string instruments. Additional dates for the symphony members are: 1/27/07 percussion and 4/04/07 brass instruments.

Chamber Music Concerts by Connecticut's Own is a new series beginning this Sunday, October 29 at 4 p.m. This 5-part Sunday chamber music concert series is headlined by Quadrivium String Quartet. Formed in 2002 by members of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra, this group brings diverse backgrounds to the collaborative art of chamber music. Sunday's performers are Mai Kagaya (piano), Larry Shiller (violin), Christopher McCormack (viola) and Richard Brown (cello). McNeil Johnston usually performs with this group but will not be available for the program. The group will present a program that includes Mozart's Piano Quartet #1, K. 478 (G minor) and Piano Quartet, Op. 26 (A Major) by Brahms. Additional dates in the series: November 19 Connecticut Composers Concert; January 28 Prevailing Winds of Connecticut; March 4 Allen Brings and Genevieve Chinn Brings, Piano, Four-Hands Concert, April 29 Errante/Cho Trio. New travel series hits the road

The library is offering a brand-new travel series on four Thursdays in November with talks ranging from a conversation with Jane and Michael Stern to travels by Daryl Hawk, from surfing the Web for travel sites to traveling solo for women. Jane and Michael Stern come to the library on Thursday, November 2 at 7 p.m. to kick-off the four-part series with a discussion of their travel memoir, Two for the Road. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Kathy Leeds, director of the library, leads the discussion on Travel on the Web-You CAN Get There from Here (in Cyberspace) on November 9. She will demonstrate how to use the Web to explore travel options-and book them. She discusses and demonstrates conventional destinations and travel means and also explores more specialized and unusual vacations. She shares personal insights on everything from discovering bed and breakfast stays in Connecticut to finding the perfect villa in Tuscany or Provence-and discloses her favorite review and research sites. On Thursday, November 16, frequent solo travelers, Joan Pendergast and Judy Zucker, along with Judy White, founding president of a Wilton-based travel center, will discuss the "how to" for women interested in traveling alone, including safety tips and destinations for memorable solo travel in the program, Going Solo: Women Traveling Alone also at 7. The final session of the series is on November 30 when international documentary photographer, Daryl Hawk, presents a slide show entitled "It's the Journey that Counts." His presentation is a retrospective of various expeditions and trips undertaken by Mr. Hawk from the Canadian Arctic, through all of North, Central and South America, Antarctica, New Zealand and ending high in the Himalayas in Bhutan. All the programs begin at 7 and are free of charge. Advance registration is suggested. Call 762-3950 or register online.
