The League of Women Voters and Wilton Library co-sponsor a Hot Topic forum, Voices in Harmony-Keeping Cool in a Heated Environment, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. The forum presents some of the legal and educational issues concerning student expression in school settings. Responding to the intense community interest in the Wilton High School "Voices in Conflict" theater production, the panel discussion and the question and answer period focus on free speech in schools, the role of arts in education and ways to preserve a community in the face of disagreement. Young writers get togetherA Writing Workshop is being held on Thursday, May 31 from 3:30-4:30 for kids in grades 4 and up. The workshop is being conducted by Raye Forsey, who mentors a writing group of six young authors during the year. The group is coming together to share their novels and writing processes. Gilbert and Bennett rememberedThe library's June art exhibition opens on Friday, June 1, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. with "Reflections from Gilbert & Bennett." The closed manufacturing site became the subject for five artists who put their talents and visions together for this creative retrospective. Artists Dorothy Hyde, Ann Kromer, Lynda Pattee, Jen Shelley and photographer Gretchen Yengst have more than 50 oils, watercolors and photographs of the decaying factory buildings, giving viewers a different perspective on the once-vibrant manufacturing facility. Jazz series continues in JuneBill Charlap, one of jazz's foremost pianists, comes to the library on Sunday, June 3 from 3-4:30 p.m. for Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room series. In the last decade, Charlap has created CDs celebrating the American songbook tradition, the songs of Hoagy Carmichael, Leonard Bernstein, and George Gershwin. The New York-born and bred Charlap has been immersed in song since a very young age - with both parents being accomplished artists. His father was Moose Charlap, a Broadway composer and songwriter, and his mother, Sandy Stewart, is a cabaret/pop singer who performs occasionally with her son. The Hot & Cool Jazz series is made possible by the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer. Crafts and teddy bear picnicKids can drop by the library on Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26 to create their own Memorial Day Crafts. Supplies are on-hand in the Children's Library. The crafts are free and registration is not required. On Friday, June 1, from 10:30-11, little kids can bring their favorite teddy bears or other stuffed animals to Teddy Bear Picnic. Stories, animal crackers and juice will all be part of the fun. Caregivers must attend with the children. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is required.
