The 112th Friends of the Library annual meeting is set for this Sunday, June 10 at 4 p.m. Election of officers for the Board of Trustees will take place, along with recognition of volunteers, staff and retiring board members. After the business meeting, participants will be treated to a segment of Poetry in Motion: An Exploration of Diversity. The student performance was part of a year-long initiative undertaken by teen librarian Susan Lauricella. The students created their own poetry then shared it with the audience using art, music, dance and the spoken word. A reception will follow the abridged performance. Hours extended for exam weekHigh school students are facing the taunting task of studying for finals, and this week the library makes that easier with more hours for them to study individually or gather in study groups. The library will remain open until 9 p.m. on Monday, June 11 through Thursday, June 14, giving the students an additional nine hours of evening study time. Six quiet study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis or the rooms can be reserved in advance by calling 762-3950.
Doll partyChildren may bring their baby dolls or other dolls for a morning celebration during Bitty Baby Party, from 10:30 - 11 on Wednesday, June 13. Children will hear stories, have snacks and make simple crafts for their favorite dolls. Caregivers must be in attendance with the children. There is no charge for the program. Father's Day craftsChildren of all ages can stop by the library next Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16, for Drop-In Father's Day Crafts. Materials and craft suggestions will be available throughout the two days for kids to make something special for dad or grandpa. There is no charge and no reservations are needed.
Summer reading program kickoffThe library's summer reading program, Fantasy Beasts and Books, kicks off with a registration week starting Monday, June 18 through Saturday, June 23. Children can stop in at any time and decorate their own reading posters. As children read books or are read to throughout the summer, they can drop-in and put stickers on their poster, keeping track of their accomplishments. Throughout the summer, kids will have story times, crafts, and live animal entertainment based on the Fantasy Beast and Books theme. A special two-week Harry Potterpalooza is planned with puppets, crafts, potions classes and a banquet to celebrate the new movie and book releases. A program brochure will be available soon detailing the summer events. The reading program is sponsored in part by Stop & Shop and The Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation. Student film festivalThe fourth consecutive Wilton High School Video Production Film Festival will be held in the Brubeck Room on Monday, June 18, from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. The film students will assemble the best of their video projects to be viewed by the public. New York troupe holds benefit for libraryThe Blue Hill Troupe will perform Gilbert and Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard on Saturday, June 23 at 8 p.m. in a benefit performance for the library.
