Starting July 2, the library is expanding its evening hours thanks to the community's approval of the town budget in May. The new hours are Mondays through Thursdays 10-8, Fridays 10-6, Saturdays 10-5 and closed Sundays in the summer. Beginning September 9, the library will have Sunday hours from 1-5. Flag-waving craftsChildren of all ages can drop in on Monday and Tuesday, July 2 and 3, to make their own patriotic crafts for the Fourth of July. Red, white and blue creations will abound. Samples of simple crafts will be available for kids to follow on their own or with guidance from caregivers. The crafts are free of charge and no registration is required.
Boy wizard and his moviesThe Harry Potter Movie Countdown begins at the library in anticipation of the theatrical release of the fifth movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. A different movie will be shown each day as follows: Thursday, July 5, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone from 4-6:45 p.m.; Friday, July 6, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets from 3-5:45 p.m.; Monday, July 9, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban from 4-6:45 p.m.; Tuesday, July 10, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from 4-6:45 p.m. At the end of each screening, there will be a raffle for one copy of the new book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows available on July 21. The movies are free and registration is not required. Children under 8 must be accompanied by adults; children 8 and over must have caregivers remain in the building. Wilton artists showcase their artThe library's 63rd Annual Summer Art Exhibition Artists' Reception takes place on Friday, July 6, from 5:30-7. More than 50 Wilton artists featuring diverse styles, media and subjects highlight this summertime favorite. The exhibition runs through Thursday, August 30. The majority of the works will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library's art fund. Artists wishing to participate in the art show should bring one or two pieces of framed and wired pieces (paintings, pastels, drawings and sculptures) to the library on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30, from 10-4 both days. Crawly creatures and flying friendsLesa Scheifele from The Lost Ark, an environmental and research program, brings live creatures to the library to teach kids about endangered species during the Wednesday Wonders program on Wednesday, July 11. Spiders, lizards, snakes and owls are just a few of her creepy, crawling and flying creatures. Little kids up to age 6 get their very own ½ hour program from 1-1:30. Children entering first grade and up see a longer program from 2-3. There is no charge for either program. Admittance is on a first come, first served basis with library staff beginning registration ½ hour before each program. The first 150 people (children and caregivers) to register will attend each program. All children must be accompanied by caregivers. The programs are part of the summer reading program, Fantasy Beasts and Books. The animal visits are sponsored by The Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation. For information: 762-3950.
Save the dates for summer concertsThe library's Summer Music & More Concert Series kicks off for the seventh consecutive year with Chance Browne and the Twinkies opening on Thursday, July 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. The concerts continue on Thursday, July 19 with Cosmic Jibaros, a Latin rock/salsa band and on Thursday, July 26 with Mook, a contemporary rock fusion band consisting of Wilton High School alums Dan Kreiger ('03), Rob Bruce ('99), Paul Dano ('02) and Chris "Gus" Johnson ('03). All three concerts are in the evening from 5-6:30. The concerts are open to the public and refreshments are free. The series is sponsored by The Village Market.
