With anticipation at a fever pitch for the July 11 theatrical release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the library is showing the first four films starting today through Tuesday. The first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone will be shown in the Brubeck Room today from 4-6:45. On Friday, July 6, the second film in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will be shown from 3-5:45 (the library closes at 6). Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will be screened on Monday, July 9, from 4-6:45 and the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, will be shown on Tuesday, July 10 from 4-6:45. Children under 8 must be accompanied by adults; children 8 and over must have caregivers remain in the building during the films. The movies are free of charge and reservations are not required. At the end of each screening, there will be a raffle for one copy of the new book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which will be released on July 21.
Art Show opening FridayThe 63rd annual Wilton Artists Summer Art Show opens on Friday, July 6, from 5:30-7 with a reception for more than 50 artists. This popular show features favorite Wilton artists who return year after year along with new talent. Since the library's expansion, the size of the summer show has also increased, with all available wall space exhibiting pieces large and small. With so many artists displaying their abilities, the show is a diverse collection of subjects, media and styles. The exhibit continues through Thursday, August 30. The majority of the pieces will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library's art book collection. For information: 762-3950.
Creeping, crawling creatures returnLesa Scheifele returns to the library with her Lost Ark animals on Wednesday, July 11, for two age-appropriate programs for children. Before she heads off to the mid-west with all her animals in tow, Lesa will be bringing a spider, snake, reptiles and other crawling and flying creatures and she will talk about endangered species. The first program from 1-1:30 is for children up to age 6. From 2-3 the program is for children entering 1st grade and up. All children must be accompanied by caregivers. There is no charge for either program. Both programs are on a first come, first served basis, with registration starting ½ hour before each program. The first 150 people (children and caregivers) to register for each program will attend. Summer concert series beginsWith renovated courtyard construction on schedule and the Brubeck Room ready in case of rain, the library's seventh annual Summer Music & More Concert Series is set to begin on Thursday, July 12, from 5-6:30 with Chance Browne and the Twinkies as the opening concert. The outdoor series also features a new sound for Wilton with Cosmic Jibaros, a Latin rock/salsa group on Thursday, July 19, and a rock fusion band called Mook, consisting of Wilton High School alums on Thursday, July 26. The concerts are open to the public with free food and refreshments. The Village Market is the sponsor of the series for the seventh consecutive year, and Michael Crystal, founder of the Grand Crew Wine Club, will be donating beverages. For more information: 762-3950.
Seven-day wizardingThe library's Seven-day Harry Potterpalooza kicks off on Saturday, July 14 with all sorts of fun activities. Kids can drop in all day to receive a lightning scar just like Harry's. At 2, a Potions Class will be held with Professor Snape and Professor Trelawney. There is no charge or registration required. On Monday, July 16 activities take place throughout the day. From 10-11:30 a.m., the library's puppet master, Lesley Keogh, will be entertaining kids with a Harry Potter puppet show. Chess will be available for kids to drop in on informal pick up games from 1-6. Professor Trelawney will be visiting again from 2-4:30 to read tea leaves and palms. There is no charge or registration for any of the activities. Drop-in crafts for children of all ages is on Tuesday, July 17 and for kids entering 4th grade and up, Incredible Creature Crafts takes place from 4-5 with registration required. Wednesday, July 18 is a Day at Hogsmeade from 1-3 with balloons, face painting and a visit to Honeydukes. A Predictions discussion takes place with busy Professor Trelawney on Thursday, July 19 from 4-5 for children entering 2nd grade and up. In anticipation of the much heralded seventh book, the Banquet at Hogwarts runs from 10 to midnight on Friday, July 20, with the new books being released to the children attending the party at 12:01 July 21. The library will remain open for children with parents or caregivers remaining in the building for the reading session. The fee for the banquet and the book is $50 per child.
