Upcoming concerts

Triple Play, the funk band with Chris Brubeck, Peter "Madcat" Ruth and Joel Brown, will play in the Brubeck Room on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 3-4 p.m. Since the library is closed on Sundays in the summer, the doors will open at 2:30 for concertgoers only. Immediately following the concert at approximately 4, a reception for "The Times of Dave Brubeck" traveling multi-media exhibit will be held. The reception is open to concertgoers and the public. Wilton Library's Hot & Cool Jazz at the Brubeck Room jazz series continues with famed singer-pianist, Dena DeRose at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. For both concerts, advance registration is recommended and pre-registrants must arrive no later than 10 minutes before each concert to be guaranteed seating. After that, and if space is available, waitlisted and walk-in registrants will be admitted. Suggested donation for each concert is $10 per person. To register: www.wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950. The Triple Play concert, the Hot & Cool Jazz concert with Dena DeRose and "The Times of Dave Brubeck" are all funded by William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer.

Young readers celebrated

While big brothers and sisters go off to school next week, little ones can take part in the Young Readers Round-up fun planned especially for them at the library. On Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 10:30-11, kids can bring their beach towels to the library for some sunny stories and songs with Life is a Beach Drop-in Story Time. On Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 10:30-11:30, kids will be treated to a Winnie-the-Pooh movie during Reel Wednesday. Animal crackers and juice will be served. Morning Can Still Be Sleepytime Story Time will be held from 10:30-11 on Thursday, Aug. 30. Kids can stay in pajamas, bring a blanket and a lovie and stop by for a very special, sleepy morning story time just for them. The three programs are for children ages 1 to 5 and their caregivers. There is no need for registration and all the programs are free of charge. Children can develop a lifelong love for the library when they are introduced early to all that libraries have to offer. The Young Readers program is part of the Friends of Wilton Library. Volunteers will be available during the week to explain the programs and benefits of becoming Young Readers. The Friends donation is $25 per child; $75 for a family. A Wilton Library-designed, original Hippo book bag is provided to all new members. New and returning members receive a special Young Readers card that allows for 7-day rental of children's DVDs, which is an extension of the usual 3-night loan period. For more information, call 762-3950.

Art exhibitions

September is a bonus month when it comes to exhibits at the library. "The Times of Dave Brubeck," a multi-media exhibit from the University of the Pacific, made possible by the William and Karen Tell Fund, continues through Sept. 16. The Norwalk River Watershed Association will be displaying their photography exhibit from Wednesday, Sept. 5 through Friday, Sept. 28. The exhibit demonstrates the intrinsic values of the local watershed, encouraging people to enjoy and take responsibility for this environmental asset. Four Wilton residents have work that is included in the collection: Laurie Jane Bepler, Patrice Gillespie, Purvi Sarup and Henryk Teraszciewicz. Renowned photographer Daryl Hawk will have an opening reception on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. "Quiet Moments" is a new exhibit of black and white nature and nautical landscapes and abstracts. The photographs were taken along the back roads and coastline of New England. The exhibit at the library will be the first public viewing of images which are also being used for a book to be published in 2008. The exhibit runs through Friday, Sept. 28. All exhibits are open to the public and free of charge.
