Writers unite

Would-be writers have a number of programs designed for them in the upcoming Writers' Block series at the library. The first session begins on Thursday, Sept. 6, with Whodunit and How: A Workshop in Writing Mystery Fiction from 10 to 1. Joanne Dobson, author of the Professor Karen Pelletier mystery series from Doubleday and Poisoned Pen Press, leads a workshop on writing detective fiction covering topics of genre, plotting characterization, setting and suspense-writing. The class is limited to eight students. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is required. To register: www.wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950. The next class in the series is on Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 10-1 with Memoir Writing Workshop: How Do I Start? led by Westport essayist and commentator Jessica Bram. Computer classes starting

The library is once again providing hands-on computer classes in basic and intermediate Word, Excel and PowerPoint with expert instruction by Mary Anne Franco, head of Network Services at the library. The first class is Basic Word on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 12:30-2 in the Computer Lab. Attendees will learn the first steps in creating and formatting documents. This year, all the computer classes are free of charge. Basic computer skills are required by participants, including proficiency with a mouse. Additional hands-on computer classes are as follows: 09/27 Basic Excel; 10/04 Intermediate Word; 10/18 Intermediate Excel; 11/01 Basic PowerPoint; 11/29 Blogs, 12/06 Intermediate PowerPoint. In addition to the hands-on classes, Mary Anne is offering half-hour private classes for people who have specific questions or issues they need to have addressed. Digital photography

A summer's worth of disappointing picture-taking may move some people to investigate new digital cameras this fall. Before anyone starts that process, they may want to visit What's New in the Digital Camera World on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 11-12:30 with Michael and Mary Anne Franco. This demonstration-style class is the first in a series of free digital photography classes offered by the library this year. This session involves new capabilities, new features, and ways to search online for best buys. Advance registration is suggested. To register: wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950. Grandparents feted

Children have a chance to have a special brunch with their grandparents on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 11:30 - 12:30 when the library hosts its second annual Grandparents' Day Brunch. Grandparents and their grandchildren will have a light meal, create a keepsake craft, share memories, and listen to stories. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is required as space is limited to 20 families. To register, call the Children's Library at 762-3950 x 217. The brunch is made possible by the Coyle Fund.

New England heralded in exhibit

Daryl Hawk, renowned world traveler and photographer, has focused his lens on the back roads and coastline of New England in his upcoming art exhibition, "Quiet Moments," which opens with a reception on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 11:30-1 at the library. The show features black and white nature and nautical landscapes and abstracts of New England that will be used for a book being published in 2008. The library's exhibit is the first viewing of these images. The reception is open to the public and free of charge. The exhibit runs through Friday, Sept. 28. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the photography benefits the library.

Jazz series continues

Famed pianist-singer Dena DeRose headlines the library's Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. Ms. DeRose is a Grammy-award nominated recording artist with 5 CDs to her credit, all of which have received superior accolades. An international performer, Ms. DeRose has performed in venues from New York City to Seattle, Tokyo and Rome. According to Alan Bargebuhr of Cadence magazine, she is a "stunningly talented pianist/vocalist." The jazz series is funded by William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer. Advance registration is recommended and pre-registrants must arrive by 4:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating. After 4:50 p.m., and if space is available, waitlisted and walk-in registrants will be admitted. Suggested donation: $10 per person. To register: wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950.
