Michael and Mary Anne Franco reprise their popular Digital Photography series starting this Saturday, Sept. 8 from 11-12:30 with What's New in the Digital Camera World. This particular session involves the new capabilities of cameras, new features, and some of the ways to search for the best camera buys. This class is a demonstration-style class. All the digital photography classes are free of charge this year, including the hands-on classes. Additional demonstration-style classes are: GIMP-A Free, Fully Functional Image Processor on Jan. 12, 2008, and Sharing Your Photos Online, set for May 3, 2008. Hands-on classes in the Computer Lab are Nov. 17, with Basic Photo Editing and March 8, 2008, with Intermediate Photo Editing. A morning for grandparentsThe library is celebrating grandparents on Sunday, Sept. 9 with a Grandparents' Day Brunch set from 11:30-12:30. Children may bring their grandparents to enjoy a light meal, create a treasured keepsake, share memories and listen to stories. Registration is required as space is limited to a few lucky families. Travel photography on exhibitThe library has the premiere showing of Daryl Hawk's "Quiet Moments," an exhibition of his black and white photography, opening with a reception on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 11:30-1. The nature and nautical landscapes and abstracts were taken on the back roads of New England and along the rugged coastline from the perspective of the water to the shore. The photographs are a compilation of images that will be used for a new book being published in 2008. The exhibit runs through Friday, Sept. 28. All of the photographs are available for purchase in different sizes, framed and unframed. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the library's art collection. Cool jazz this SundayDena DeRose, a noted singer/pianist, performs this Sunday, Sept. 9, at 5 for the library's Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room series. Ms. DeRose is an acclaimed pianist who has performed nationally and internationally to rave reviews. One of her 5 CDs, "A Walk in the Park," received three Grammy-award nominations. Advance registration is strongly recommended. Doors open at 4:30. Pre-registrants are asked to arrive by 4:50 to be guaranteed seating. After that time, waitlisted and walk-in concertgoers will be seated as space permits. The suggested donation for the event is $10 per person. Wilton Library Readers commenceThis season's first gathering of the Wilton Library Readers is Wednesday, Sept. 12, from noon to 1:30. Susan Boyer, a popular discussion leader, takes the group through Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. This informal book group meets every second Wednesday of the month through May, with the exception of December. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunches and enjoy the engaging conversation. Symphony series for familiesThe Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for Kids returns to the library on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 2-3 with an exploration of woodwind instruments. Members of the Norwalk Symphony chat with the children and play their instruments, demonstrating various styles and ranges of music in this 4-part series. Children ages 3 - 10 and their families are encouraged to participate in this hands-on demonstration. Author visitsThe library's Visiting Author series brings a number of well-known writers to share their thoughts and stories with audiences this fall and spring. Gail Tsukiyama, author of Dreaming Water and The Samurai's Garden, introduces her sixth novel, The Street of a Thousand Blossoms, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 7-8:30 p.m. The story is about two orphaned brothers, Hiroshi and Kenji Matsumoto, following their tale through the catastrophic effects of war and the resulting reconstruction. According to Booklist, "Tsukiyama is a mesmerizing storyteller who focuses on family tradition, and the solace of nature and art." Books will be available for purchase and signing.
