Music to kids' ears

The Norwalk Symphony Family Program (Not) Just for Kids begins on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 2-3 with an exploration of woodwind instruments. This first of a four-part series gives children hands-on experiences with orchestra instruments. Children ages 3-10 and their families are invited to attend any one or all of the programs scheduled throughout the 2007-2008 season in the library's Brubeck Room. Additional dates are Nov. 17, for strings; March 22, 2008, for percussion; and May 3, 2008, for brass instruments. The programs are sponsored by the Xerox Corporation and are free of charge. Visiting author series begins

This fall, the library is proud to present a number of distinguished authors for the library's Visiting Author series. Gail Tsukiyama, author of The Samurai's Garden and Dreaming Water, appears on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 7-8:30 p.m. Ms. Tsukiyama will discuss her sixth and latest novel, The Street of a Thousand Blossoms, a moving story of two orphaned Japanese brothers and their triumphs and tribulations before and after World War II. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The evening is sponsored by R. J. Julia Booksellers of Madison and the library. There is no charge for the program. Story Times begin

Children ages 1-6 have Fall Story Times beginning Monday, Sept. 24 through Wednesday, Nov. 14 at various times and days as follows: Ones and Twos with caregivers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:15-10:45; Twos and Threes with caregivers also on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:15-10:45; Threes and Fours from 11:30-noon on Wednesdays; and Fours through Sixes on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2-2:45. Healthy Choices

The library is pleased to be partners with the Stamford Hospital for a series of programs entitled Healthy Choices. The first of the programs is Hands-on Health Information on the Internet from 10-noon on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Gui Van Moorsel, from Stamford Hospital, guides attendees to online sources of reliable, non-biased and up-to-date information to make informed healthcare choices. There is no charge for the program. Space is limited, therefore registration is required. The program will be repeated on Oct 4, Oct. 30 and Nov. 8. The first of the 3-part series, Lunch-n-Learn Osteoporosis Series, begins on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 12:30-2 p.m. with Diagnosis and Treatment. Dr. Mary E. Arden-Cordone discusses the nature and clinical manifestations of osteoporosis, risk factors for developing the disease, and the importance of its early detection and treatment. The 3-part osteoporosis series is free of charge. Advance registration is suggested. To register: wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950. The additional parts are set for Oct. 10 with Osteoporosis Pharmaceuticals: Treating a Silent and Insidious Disorder and Nov. 7 Osteoporosis Prevention and Control. The Healthy Choices programs are sponsored by Stamford Hospital and the library, with support by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine--New England Region under contract #N01-LM-1-3518 with the National Library of Medicine.

Computer Classes

The Hands-on Computer Class for Basic Excel is on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 12:30-2 with instruction by Mary Anne Franco, the library's head of Network Services. Participants will learn the essence of spreadsheets in this free computer seminar. Basic computer skills, including mouse proficiency, are required. Additional hands-on classes are: Oct. 4 Intermediate Word; Oct. 18 Intermediate Excel; Nov. 1 Basic PowerPoint; Nov. 29 Blogs, and December 6 Intermediate PowerPoint. A hands-on computer class of a different nature is also available on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 6:30-8 p.m. People wishing to learn English can do so with this introductory class of Rosetta Stone, the software package that makes learning English easy and fun. Basic computer skills are required. The programs are free of charge. Advance registration is required for hands-on computer classes as space is limited in the Computer Lab. Rosetta Stone classes repeat on October 1 from 12:30-2 and November 29 from 6:30 - 8.

Ladies' fund-raiser The eight annual Ladies' Soiree, Celebrating Friendships, is a few weeks away on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 6-8 p.m. The fund-raiser for the library embraces the idea of doing things with and for friends. A silent auction of services, vacations and fun events to do with friends, along with hors d'oeuvres and beverages are all part of the evening's activities. Attendees are encouraged to come with friends or meet many new ones. The proceeds of the night benefit the library. The fee is $50 per person.
