The library has partnered with Stamford Hospital to present Healthy Choices, a series of healthcare seminars by Stamford Hospital medical personnel designed to bring up-to-the minute information to participants. The seminars include discussions on osteoporosis, joint replacement, dietary supplements, breast cancer and pandemic flu. In addition to the seminars, hands-on computer classes are available showing attendees how to find high-quality health information from MEDLINEPlus, NIH Senior Health and other online resources. The first computer class, Hands-on Health Information on the Internet, is Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 10 - noon in the library's computer lab. Repeat classes are on Oct. 4, 30 and Nov. 8. The first health information presentation is the 3-part series, Osteoporosis Lunch & Learn Series set to begin on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The first part is Diagnosis & Treatment with Dr. Mary Arden-Cordone. Part 2 is Treating a Silent & Insidious Disorder with Geoff Gittleson, Pharm.D. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, and the third part is Prevention & Control with Sharon Weiss, MA, PT on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The 3-part series is from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. with lunch from 12:30 - 1; presentations from 1 - 2 and Q & As from 2 - 2:30. On Thursday, Oct. 11 from 12:30 - 2, breast health experts, Dr. Donna-Marie Menasseh and Michelle Speer, RN, from Stamford Hospital's Women's Breast Cancer Center speak about prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. A pink bag lunch will be served while attendees learn about breast health in a friendly environment. Dr. Michael Parry, Director of Infectious Diseases, discusses Pandemic Influenza: Are We Ready? on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 12:30 - 2. Joint Replacement is the Healthy Choices topic on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 12:30 - 2 with Dr. Frank DiFazio, Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Joseph Feuerstein discusses Dietary Supplements-What's It all About?, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Story times beginFall Story Times begin for children ages 1 - 6 starting Monday, Sept. 24 through Wednesday, November 14. Ones and Twos with caregivers meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:15 - 10:45; Twos and Threes with caregivers also meet from 10:15 - 10:45 in a different group on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; Threes and Fours gather on Wednesdays, from 11:30 - noon; and Fours through Sixes meet on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 2 - 2:45. Computer ClassesHands-on computer classes continue this week with Basic Excel on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 12:30 - 2. Participants learn how to create and manipulate spreadsheets in this free computer seminar. Additional hands-on computer classes are: 10/04 Intermediate Word; 10/16 Basic Excel; 10/18 Intermediate Excel; 11/01 Basic PowerPoint; 11/29 Blogs, 12/06 Intermediate PowerPoint. Also on Thursday, Rosetta Stone Classes are being offered from 6:30 - 8 p.m. for people wishing to learn English using the popular software program. This class is an introduction to the Rosetta Stone software in the library's computer lab. Basic computer skills are required for hands-on instruction, including mouse proficiency. Ladies' fund-raiserThe library's eighth annual Ladies' Soirée Fund-raiser, Celebrating Friendships, takes place at the library on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 6 - 8. The evening is a time for women in the community to come together, chat, share, reflect and enjoy each others' company with delicious hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. A silent auction of wonderful things to do with and for friends is included to benefit the library's collections, programs and technology. Stock market games for teens and adultsOnce again, the library is able to offer stock market games for teens and adults this fall, with the help of Michael McEneaney, the library's in-house stock guru. Stock Market Game for Teens is on Mondays, from Oct. 1 through Dec. 3. The first session is from 4 - 5:30, with subsequent sessions from 4 - 5. Teens in grades 7 - 12 learn about the world of high finance through this game simulation, using a real-time portfolio with fake currency. The game is endorsed by the National Council on Economic Education. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is required in teams. The teen program is made possible by the Pat and John Curran Teen Fund. Stock Market Game for Adults runs on Tuesdays, Oct. 2 through Dec. 4 from 7 - 8 p.m. with the first session going from 7 - 8:30. There is no charge for the adult Stock Market Game.
