The eighth annual Ladies' Soirée fund-raiser is this Sunday, Sept. 30, from 6-8 p.m., to benefit the library's collection, programs and technology funds. "Celebrating Friendships" is the theme of the night, with a silent auction full of fun and fantastic items and services to share with or give to friends. The evening is a time for women to get together after the busy summer, renew old friendships and start new ones. Hors d'oeuvres and cocktails will be served. The fee for the event is $50 per person. Stock Market games for teens and adultsThe library kicks off its Stock Market simulation games with two separate programs for teens and adults starting next week. Participants learn about the world of high finance using the real stock market, and create real-time portfolios with a live trading simulator. Teens in grades 7 - 12 register in teams for this competitive, fun, interactive game simulation. The program runs nine weeks on Mondays (no session on Oct. 8) from Oct. 1 through Dec. 3, from 4-5 p.m. The first session is 4-5:30. Advance registration is required and kids should register in teams, or they will be paired in teams. The teen game is sponsored by the Patricia & John Curran Teen Fund. The adult game commences Tuesday, Oct. 2 and runs ten Tuesdays through Dec. 4, from 7-8 p.m. The first session runs 7 - 8:30. The adults also need to register in advance. Author and educator visitRosalind Wiseman, well-known author of Queen Bees & Wannabes, presents Surviving the Hive: Improving Relations with the Adults in Your Child's Life on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 7:15-9 p.m. at the library. The internationally recognized author and educator draws from her latest book, Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads: Dealing wit the Parents, Teachers, Counselors and Coaches That Can Make or Break Your Child's Future. Parents and educators will learn important strategies to improve their relationships with everyone in the lives of the children they work with--from their own kids, to their teachers, coaches and principals. Hands-on Health Information from the Internet is on Thursday, Oct. 4, 30 and Nov. 8 from 10-noon with Gui Van Moorsel. A 3-part Osteoporosis Series is on Wednesday, Sept. 26, Oct. 10 and Nov. 7 from 12:30-2; Breast Cancer and a Pink Bag Lunch is the topic on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 12:30-2; Pandemic Influenza is Wednesday, Oct. 24, 12:30 2; Joint Replacement is Thursday, Oct. 25, 12:30-2 and Dietary Supplements is Wednesday, Nov. 7, 7-8:30 p.m. All the programs are free of charge with presentations by Stamford Hospital personnel.
