Environmental programs this month

The library's environmental initiative continues with a number of programs scheduled for this month, including a lighting fair, lectures, panel discussions, a film screening and a hands-on environmental study. On Saturday, Oct. 13, Wilton High School science teacher Jim Lucey conducts Co-Discovery: An Outdoor/Indoor Norwalk River Research Lab for Teens and Parents from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. starting at the high school. This fascinating environmental workshop examines real life macroinvertebrates and other specimens of aquatic life. The workshop takes place in the Norwalk River and WHS lab, and includes a discussion of how the local river's ecosystems can be improved. A continental breakfast will be served. Teens and parents are encouraged to attend, although teens may attend without parents. Space is limited to 25 teens/parents in total. Advance registration is required. To register: wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950. The program is sponsored by the Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation for Wilton Library's Environmental Initiative, and the Norwalk River Watershed Association. Additional programs this month include an Energy Saving Light Fair from 9-5 on Oct. 17, with a discussion on clean energy options that evening from 7-9; and a film screening of The Warming Of Connecticut on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 6:30-9 p.m. with a panel discussion following the movie. Mike Lindberg, Wilton Energy Commission Chair; Rudy Marconi, Ridgefield First Selectman; Brendan Hanrahan, CT EarthNet's executive officer; Rob Wall, Connecticut Clean Energy Fund and Wilton First Selectman Bill Brennan will participate in the evening. All of the programs are free of charge with advance registration suggested. Visit wiltonlibrary.org/events to learn more about each of the environmental programs and to register. Wilton Library's environmental initiative is sponsored by the Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation.

Artist's opening reception

The artist's opening reception for Suzanne Crossland takes place on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The Wilton resident's exhibition, "In Life There Are Many Windows," provides a strong showing of her diverse talents and styles. A robust collection of watercolor, acrylic, pastel and mixed media paintings will adorn the library's gallery walls. The public is invited to the opening reception. All of the paintings are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibition runs through Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Silent films with music

The Brubeck Room will be filled with live piano accompaniment for the screening of two silent movies in the program, The Sounds of Silents: Silent Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 2-4:30. The silent comedy classic, The Kid Brother, starring Harold Lloyd and a comedy short subject entitled Two Tars (1928), starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, will be shown. Theater pianist Professor John Mucci, whose scores capture this bygone era with total accuracy, provides live musical accompaniment for both pictures. Film historian Lou Sabini introduces the films from his collection. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. To register: wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950.

Election season

Wilton residents will get an opportunity to gather with candidates running for the six town boards on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 7-8:30 during Meet the Candidates Night at the Library. The Town boards represented are Selectmen, Finance, Planning & Zoning, Education, Assessment Appeals, and Zoning Board of Appeals. The League of Women Voters, the Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the library are sponsoring the event. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Teen poetry initiative kicks off

Following on the success of last year's poetry initiative, teens in grades 7-12 are invited to submit original poetry and artwork for this year's Poetry in Motion: Right, WRONG and somewhere in-between. The program will culminate in a two-performance, poetry and arts event centered around the theme of ethics and morals in March, 2008 at the library. A commemorative book with the poems and selected artwork will be published for the event. All submissions must be in by Monday, Oct. 29. For more information, contact Teen Librarian Susan Lauricella by phone at 762-3950 ext. 243 or e-mail teenpoetry@wiltonlibrary.org. The program is sponsored by the library with funding from the John and Patricia Curran Teen Fund.
