With Halloween fast approaching, the library is set with fun and spooky things to do. In tonight's Halloween with Hades, from 7-8:30, children in grades 3-6 join Hades and other characters from Rick Riordan's Lightning Thief and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Children will explore the Underworld of Greek mythology with activities and light refreshments. Kids are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes, which do not have to be togas. On Sunday, Oct. 28, kids in grades 3-6 can make Haunted Gingerbread Houses from 2-3 p.m. There is no charge, but because space is limited, registration is required. For kids of any age, Drop-in Halloween Crafts are being held Monday, Oct. 29 through Wednesday, Oct. 31. Children can come in at any time from 10 to 8 each day to make the Halloween crafts that are on display in the Crafts Room. There is no charge and reservations are not required.
Upcoming concertsThe opening concert for the 60th Candlelight Concert Series featuring Orion String Quartet is Sunday, Oct. 28 from 4-6 p.m. at Wilton Congregational Church, 70 Ridgefield Road. A portion of the proceeds benefit the library. The library's Connecticut's Own Sunday music series continues on Nov. 4 at 4 with pianist Doug Bogan, a Wilton High School junior and library employee. Art Series continuesOn Thursday, Nov. 1, Art Series attendees are treated to a lecture entitled Florence and the Doors, from 3-4 p.m. Popular Metropolitan Museum of Art docent, Joan Kaskell, returns to the library with a lecture and slide presentation on Lorenzo Ghiberti's (1378-1455) magnificent renaissance masterpiece--Gates of Paradise, which will be on exhibit at the Met from October 30, 2007-January 13, 2008. The gilded bronze doors of the east portal of the Baptistery in Florence are among the seminal monuments of the Italian Renaissance. After the conclusion of their four-city United States tour, the works return to Florence, to be reassembled in their original bronze framework and placed in a specially designed, hermetically sealed case in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, never to travel again. As an added treat, the library and St. Matthew's Church are co-sponsoring a Trip to the Met on Thursday, Nov. 8 where the doors can be viewed. French journeyThe International Book Group: Literature of Other Lands meets this month on Thursday, Nov. 1, from 7-8:30 p.m. Guest speaker Fredi Bremond will discuss France using the book Hunting and Gathering by Anna Gavalda.
