The League of Women Voters, in conjunction with the library, presents another in the continuing series of Hot Topics tonight at 7:30 with The Medical Use of Marijuana: Legal and Medical Questions. The panel discussion centers on the palliative use of medical marijuana. Panelists include State Representative Toni Boucher; State Representative Michael Lawlor; Andrea Ruskin, M.D., Norwalk Hospital; and Seyed Aleali, M.D., St. Vincent's Hospital. Abstract art show beginsThe Silvermine Guild Arts Center has its opening reception of "Terraform," Friday, Nov. 30, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the library. Artists from the Silvermine Guild will exhibit through Dec. 28, 2007. The exhibiting artists are Ann Conrad, Liana Moonie, Gerald Saladyga and Eve Stockton. The works being exhibited challenge the generally accepted idea of what is a landscape "painting." According to Jeff Mueller, exhibit organizer, "Each of the artists engaged with the landscape to create abstract works that are poetic, analytic and sometimes scientific in their representation of landscapes." Holiday book and gift saleBeginning Nov. 30, the Gallery will be featuring not only paintings from the Silvermine Guild Arts Center, but a "shop" full of beautiful and new books plus CDs, and DVDs that are still in their shrink-wrapping. All of these items have been donated to the book sale and are in pristine condition, ready for gift giving. Prices are well below retail, some as inexpensive as $2. There is something for everyone from gorgeous art books, brand new cook books, and lots of Christmas books, to gardening, literature, and a huge number of delightful and special children's books. The virtual store will stay in business until the shelves are empty.
Pooches as reading palsKids have an opportunity to read to quiet, gentle therapy dogs on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the program, Tales to Tails, from 2-3:15. Children can bring books from home or choose from the library's selection to read for 15 minutes to the dogs. There is no charge for the program however, advance registration is required. Celebrating the holidaysA number of holiday programs and events take place in the beginning of December starting off with The Hanukkah Program on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 2-3 p.m. for children ages 5-9. Hanukkah stories, crafts and refreshments will all be part of the fun. Children must be accompanied by caregivers. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is required. Also on Sunday, the annual Holiday Party for Friends of the Library will take place that evening from 5:30-7:30. This annual event is open to everyone. The annual Giving Tree will be up and ready for people to donate books to the library in honor or in memory of friends and loved ones, along with the holiday book and gift sale in the gallery at which purchases for individuals may be made. Drop-In Hanukkah Crafts are on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 3 and 4, from 10-8 in the Children's Library. Materials are supplied by the library and there are no reservations. Children can use the sample Hanukkah-themed crafts as a guide. The Wilton Holiday Walk is on Friday, Dec. 7, from 5-7 with the library participating in all the festivities. People are invited to warm up mid-way through their walk and enjoy the holiday refreshments.
Holiday stories galoreChildren have lots of opportunities to enjoy holiday stories and customs from other lands over the next week. Drop-In Story Times are on Mondays, Dec. 3 and 10. Ones, Twos and Threes meet from 10:15-10:45; Fours, Fives and Sixes meet from 2-2:45. The programs are free and no reservations are required. Children ages 8-11 hear Christmas stories and learn about customs in Great Britain when Raye Forsey joins them on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 3-4 p.m. in Christmas in Great Britain.
