Energy talk tonight

The League of Women Voters Hot Topic panel discussion takes place tonight with Wilton Speaks Up…On Alternative Energy, from 7:30–9:30 at the library. The panel includes Mike Lindberg, the chairman of Wilton's Energy Commission; Ron French, solar energy expert and president of Solarworks Inc., along with some of Wilton's youngest energy experts from Wilton High School and Cider Mill School. Attendees are encouraged to bring their ideas and questions about ways that Wilton can practice the three R's of energy savings - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Refreshments will be served. Photography exhibit opens Friday

The Wilton Arts Council Focus ’08 Juried Photography Exhibition reception takes place on Friday, April 11, from 6–7:30 p.m. The 10th annual exhibition chooses Best in Show, Adult, Student (high school) and Youth awards. The reception and exhibit are open to the public. The show runs through Saturday, April 26.

Georgetown film screened

The documentary, Georgetown, Connecticut, will have a premiere showing at the library on Sunday, April 13, at 4 p.m. Two years in the making through the Georgetown History Project, the 30-minute documentary educates as it entertains and preserves the highlights of Georgetown's past for future generations. The film was directed by Redding's filmmaker John Maher of JEM Films. The film is suitable for all ages and can be shared across generations. Refreshments will be served. GHP's 544 T-shirts will be on sale and DVDs of the movie will be available to order. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is suggested. Bread and Brennan

The Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the library are hosting Breakfast with the First Selectman, Thursday, April 17, from 8 – 9:15 in the Brubeck Room of the library. The public is invited to this informal chat with Bill Brennan, Wilton’s First Selectman. Topics include the 2008-2009 budget, the Route 7 construction and the town’s goals and objectives. Vacation week

Kids have a few activities to enjoy at the library during vacation week. Spring Story Times for children ages 1-6 take place on various days and times, Monday through Wednesday. Story Times continue through May 21. On Thursday, April 17, Reel Thursday offers Thomas and the Treasure at 10:30 a.m. and Bee Movie at 2. Popcorn and lemonade will be served. Children under 8 must be accompanied by caregivers; children between 8 and 12 must have caregivers in the building. The movies are free and there is no advance registration required. Drop-in Earth Day Crafts are available for kids of all ages on Friday, April 18, from 10–6. The crafts are free and reservations are not needed.

Earth Day celebration

The library is celebrating Earth Day on Sunday, April 20 from 1–4:30 with something for everyone. The ever-popular Earth Balloon makes a return visit to the library, providing an opportunity for everyone to learn about the environment through an interactive and captivating journey around and inside the Earth with a program specifically geared to Earth Day. The gallery will be turned into a place for people to find out more about environmental issues. Recycling containers for collecting old cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be available. Attendees can bring plastic grocery bags and receive a recycle bag that can be used over and over again, sponsored by the Village Market, the library and Millstone Farm. Children will be able to plant seeds in pots to take them home and watch them grow. Energy saving light bulbs will once again be on sale for residents to buy and start using at home. Tasty treats and energy-saving tips are all part of the fun, enlightening and educational day. Amy Bloom at library

Visiting author Amy Bloom comes to the library on Tuesday, April 22, from 7–9 p.m. to discuss her latest novel, Away. Author of two novels, two collections of short stories, and a nominee for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, she has also written for many other publications. Bloom will discuss her new book, which is an epic and intimate story of young Lillian Leyb, a dangerous innocent, an accidental heroine. When her family is destroyed in a Russian pogrom, Lillian comes to America alone, determined to make her way in a new land. When word comes that her daughter, Sophie, might still be alive, Lillian embarks on an arduous odyssey back to Siberia to find her. All of the qualities readers love in Amy Bloom’s work – her humor and wit, her elegant and irreverent language, her unflinching understanding of passion and the human heart – come together in the embrace of this brilliant novel, which is at once heartbreaking, romantic, and completely unforgettable.
