Arbor Day trees planted

The Wilton Garden Club is planning a community event at the library in celebration of Arbor Day on Friday, April 25, starting at 3 p.m. From 3–4, adults can hear presentations made by key community members in the Brubeck Room. From 4–5, children will be able to see trees planted in honor of Alice Levin and one will be planted for Paul Young, Wilton’s tree warden. The five trees named for Alice Levin are being donated by her sons. The public is invited to this Arbor Day celebration.

Books and so much more

The library’s annual book sale fund-raiser begins bright and early on Saturday, April 26 and runs through Tuesday, April 29. This year’s event is the biggest in the library’s history, with more than 70,000 books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and videos. Early buyers can begin their shopping Saturday morning, from 7–9, for an admission fee of $15. The sale then opens for free for the general public starting at 9 and runs to 5. For the first time, the library will hold a live auction of rare books beginning at 11 a.m. A silent auction will be held on Saturday and Sunday for a different selection of rare books. Visit www.wiltonlibrary.org and click on Book Sale 2008 for listings of the live and silent auction books. The Rotary Club of Wilton will once again be on-hand providing doughnuts and coffee for the morning shoppers and hot dogs and beverages for the noontime buyers. Proceeds from the sales will also benefit the library. On Sunday, the sale is from noon – 5 with items priced as marked. Monday, the sale is from 10–5 with items half off the marked price and on Tuesday, items are free with donations accepted. For more information, call 762-3950.

It’s a mystery

The Kids’ Book Club meets on Wednesday, April 30, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. and the kids are in for a real mystery. Kids in grades 2-6 can read a mystery book of their choosing, and then come discuss it on Wednesday and enjoy a mystery dinner. The program is sponsored by Findorak & Sons. May Day craft and May pole

Children of all ages can come to the library on Thursday, May 1 during library hours to create their own May Day craft. From 11–11:30 a.m., children have a special treat of dancing around the library’s custom-made May pole set up in the courtyard, or inside if the weather is inclement. Children can wear or carry their creations from the drop-in crafts. This is a photo-op for parents and caregivers. There is no charge for the program and no registration.

Switzerland discussed

Jacqueline Smith from Switzerland is the guest speaker for this month’s International Book Group: Literature of Other Lands, meeting on Thursday, May 1, from 7–8:30 p.m. This book group discusses other cultures by reading different authors for pleasure and then having guest speakers from the respective countries lead the discussions. Smith will be using The Xenophobe’s Guide to the Swiss by Paul Bilton as a background for her discussion. Refreshments and international desserts will be served. There is no charge for the program. Advance registration is recommended. To register: www.wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950.

Survey says…

The results are in from a survey given in late autumn 2007, when a random sample of students were anonymously surveyed on the subjects of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Parents also took a similar survey voluntarily; the combined surveys form the largest sample since 1998. The data will be presented at the library on Thursday, May 1, from 7–9 p.m. A panel will explain the results, answer questions, and address concerns. The program is sponsored by Positive Directions, Wilton Youth Services, the Task Force to Reduce Underage Drinking, and Wilton Library. There is no charge. Registration is suggested. To register: www.wiltonlibrary.org/events or call 762-3950.
