Greetings!
Spring is upon us - and after the winter Wilton has had, its arrival is surely welcome. The Library will be busy this month with three different fund raisers (we rely solely on contributions to fund our purchase of books and audiovisual materials each year). In addition, we'll have programs and activities for kids, teens, adults and seniors.
Please join us this month to check out a book, a magazine (we carry over 200 subscriptions), a book on tape or CD for the car, a video or DVD to enjoy with the family or on your own! Stop by to take part in one of our programs this month. Or visit our website to check your account, use our resources, or check up to date announcements about what's going on at the Wilton Library, the center for discovery in the heart of our community.
April is Poetry Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We'll
celebrate Poetry Month in two wonderful ways:
- On Saturday, April 3rd at 2 pm, Ben Van Vechten will lead
a celebration of poetry in the Library's Community Room. Ben has
been a tremendously popular seminar leader over the past couple of
years and has developed a large and enthusiastic following. This
is your chance to sample his method of making poetry accessible and
enjoyable for us all! Stop by the front desk to register and pick
up your packet of poems in advance.
- On Friday, April 30th, the Library will hold its second Teen Poetry Open Mike Night from 7-9 pm. Teens can read, sing, "rap," and/or play music to original or existing pieces of poetry. Our first Open Mike Night had almost 90 attending - get your registration in now to be assured of a place!
Family Fun-raiser with Tom Weber
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tom Weber, the fun and fabulous storyteller and children's entertainer
will be on stage for the Library at 2 pm on Sunday, April 18th,
at Middlebrook School Auditorium (131 School Road). Children aged
2-8 and their families will enjoy a rolicking afternoon with Tom, and
refreshments and other items will be available in the auditorium's
lobby.
Tickets will are on sale at the Library's front desk now and will be at the door (if seats are still available) one hour prior to the performance. Each ticket costs $10, seating is unassigned, and profits from this event will fund the Library's collections and technology.
To meet Tom, check out his site!
Sit, Speak, Action!

Families are in for more fun on Thurday, April 29th from
4-5 pm when canine trainer Peggy Reed shares training techniques,
secrets of the trade and anecdotes about famous actors and their animal
co-stars.

Animals she has trained have appeared in many television programs including "One Life to Live," "All My Children," "Guiding Light," "Sesame Street," "Ryan's Hope," "Regis and Kathy Lee," "Late Night with David Letterman," the USA Network, the MSG Network, commercials, off-Broadway productions, PBS movies as well as in numerous print ads including Vogue and LIFE Magazine.

Book Discussions in April
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book lovers of all sorts can
join us at 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 29th to discuss Pat Barker's Border
Crossing with popular leader Susan Boyar. Wine and cheese will
be served along with a fascinating exploration of this psychological
thriller. Robert Allen Papinchak of USA Today wrote, "Barker
soars to new heights with this harrowing, contemporary study of fate
tainted by the stench of evil."
Proceeds ($25 per person) from this program will allow us to buy more discussible books for our "Book Group Books" collection!
Other discussions during the month:
- Wilton Library Readers, with popular leader, Susan Boyar, will discuss Daniel Mason's The Piano Tuner over lunch (bring your own) on Wednesday, April 7th from noon to 1 pm.
- Seniors will join Ben Van Vechten at Comstock Community Center at 11 am on Tuesday, April 27th to discuss Sarah Orne Jewett's A Country Doctor.
Drop-In Story Times
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A grant from Fleet Bank has made it possible for us to offer
drop-in story times at no charge throughout the year. Join us in April
whenever it is convenient for you and your children ages 1-5 and grades
K-3.
We so enjoy sharing the love of books with our youngest listeners and readers!

On Exhibit: Ron Gulick
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please stop by to see our exhibition of more than 30 watercolor,
acrylic and oil paintings of the Norwalk harbor and watershed area
by local artist, Ron Gulick. An opening reception will take place on Saturday,
April 3rd from 5:30-7 pm, so join us to meet the artist and sample
refreshments that evening.
Ron's artwork will be on exhibit through April 30th and 20% of the proceeds from works sold will benefit the Library's art programs and collections.
Expansion Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are anxiously awaiting groundbreaking and the unveiling of
our upcoming construction schedule! A calendar of expected progress
will be available next month, and we have set Sunday, June 13th,
the date of our Annual Meeting, as the day we will officially break
ground.
I can report to you now that we anticipate construction to take approximately 18 months, during which the Library will remain open and ready to serve you, though we all may have to live with a bit of extra noise and dust during that period. By December, 2005, the bulk of our building will be complete, though renovation of the current space may take a bit longer.
I promise to keep you all posted - on the Web, via email and when you visit us in person - about how it all is going and what to expect!
Amnesty Week - April 12th-18th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Library will hold its annual Amnesty Week to encourage return
of books and audiovisual materials that may have been "temporarily
lost" at home or in the car. We are hoping that everyone will check
under the beds, in the backpacks and in other remote corners of the
world to get these items back into circulation.
For these five days, late fees will be waived for returned overdue items. Simply bring the late materials in with a donation of non-perishable goods that we'll give to the Wilton Food Pantry.
Please note that amnesty does not apply to fees already on customers' records from items returned before April 10. Note, too, that videos, DVDs, and CD- ROMs borrowed between April 12 and April 18 are not part of Amnesty Week.
