Hi! It's hard to believe that the summer is half over. Even though we are in the midst of its dog days, we're certainly not "stagnating in sultry heat" at the Library! New hours (we're now open until 8 pm each night Monday through Thursday), a newly refurbished courtyard, and a new longer loan period on our recently purchased fiction books are just a few of the attractions that are drawing folks in for a visit. Concerts, art exhibits, fantastic programs for kids of all ages, comfortable seating and cool shelter from that heat and humidity make it a terrific summer-long destination. Stop by and leave the dog days behind! See you soon - and often, |
Self Defense for Teens ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Wednesdays, August 1st and 8th, from 7 to 8 pm, martial art master instructors (and Wilton Library staff members!) Shelley Lindstrom and Dave Palmieri will hold a two-session class in self defense for girls aged 13 through 18. Girls who have a heightened sense of themselves, their surroundings and their circumstances are better prepared for the challenges they may face close to or far away from home. Whether they are just going out for a movie night with friends or heading off to a college campus for the semester, this course can prove to be a lifesaver. Attendees should wear comfortable exercise clothing for the hour of instruction.
There is no charge for the program, but advance registration is required - and participation is limited, so please contact us soon to sign up! |
Creature Crafts for August ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Continuing our summer reading theme of Fantasy Beasts & Books, our Children's Library staff will hold several craft programs during August. We are most grateful to the Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation for sponsoring these sessions as well as much of the Summer Reading program.
Thursdays, August 2nd, 9th, and 16th Thursday, August 2nd, 9th, and 16th from 4 to 5 pm |

August Story Times ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
August is the perfect time for a relaxing story break at the Library. No registration is necessary. Just come into the cool (and watch our magnificent animal mural grow!) on the following days and times, depending on your child's age:
1-2 years with caregivers 3-4 years 5-6 years with caregivers In additon, on Tuesday, August 28th, from 10:30 to 11 am, we will hold a Life is a Beach drop-in story time sponsored by the Young Reader Round-up that is open to all children ages 1-5 (with their caregivers). Kids - bring your beach towels to the Library and drop in for some sandy, sunny stories and songs! And finally, on Thursday, August 30, from 10:30 to 11:30 am, the Young Reader Round-up will sponsor a morning sleepy time story time. The session is open to all children, ages 1 through 5, accompanied by a caregiver. |
Teen Concert with the Freedom Fries on August 9th ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We just wrapped up our July Summer Music & More Courtyard Concert Series, but even more music is on the way especially for teens. Kids in grades 7-12 are invited to their own concert with The Freedom Fries (and band members Evan Paul, Dave Walker, Dan King and Emile Fares) on Thursday, August 9th, from 8-9:30 pm.
Music and refreshments are free, thanks to the Patricia and John Curran Teen Fund. Please call 762- 3950 for more information, but no registration is necessary. |
Teens Get Organized ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Library's own Whitney Walker, teen assistant and middle school science teacher, will provide expert advice and tips to teens on how to transform from being disorganized into organized and on top of things. She will show students entering grades 7-12 how to develop systems that work for home and school, creating checklists of materials needed and sharing tips from other teens.
This program was booked to capacity the first time it was held, so be sure to register soon to save a space! The session on August 14th, from 4 to 5 pm, is sure to be time well spent before the start of the new school year. |
Wednesday Wonders: Casey Carle's BubbleMania ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Families will enjoy the BIG bubble, magical fun of bubble artist Casey Carle on Wednesday, August 15th, from 2 to 3 pm. Casey starting bubbling professionally in 1987 while performing for Ringling Brothers Circus. After running away FROM the circus, Casey expanded his bubble skills into a solo act that is a full-time occupation. Humor, both verbal and physical, is a big part of Casey's performance style. It's this spontaneity and off-the-cuff comedy that keeps the show fresh for him and up to 400 audiences a year. He has been a huge hit in the past at the Wilton Library, so be sure to join us for some great bubble fun!
Please note that all children must be accompanied by caregivers and that admission will be strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. Our staff will begin registration at 1:30 pm at the door and the first 150 people to register will be seated. Thanks to our friends at Stop & Shop for sponsoring this afternoon of summer fun! |
Robert the Guitar Guy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Wednesday, August 22nd, from 10:30 to 11:30 am, the ever-popular and zany Robert Markowitz (Robert the Guitar Guy) will entertain children and their caregivers, alike. Registration is limited to 75 people, so make sure that you sign up soon to get a seat.
Robert's shows are designed to teach trust, courage, and gentleness. While set in a "long, long ago" world, they address the daily problems and challenges of young children. Robert's superb guitar work and interactive style punctuate the messages of these stories. Interestingly, Robert was trained as a lawyer and practiced as a criminal attorney for about five years... it is clear that his love of kids, music, and teaching are his true calling, however. Join us! |
Did You Know? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Starting August 1st, the Library is extending loan periods for new adult fiction to three weeks. While books were previously loaned for one or two weeks (depending on length), now readers will be able to keep them out for a more comfortable amount of time and will be better able to fit reading the latest best-seller into a busy lifestyle.
We know this new lending policy will prove popular with the hundreds of customers who avidly browse our new fiction on the special shelves just across from the Circulation Desk. As a matter of fact, with the exception of feature film DVDs and magazines, everything in the building will have a three-week loan period. We will be devoting more of our book budget to new fiction to make sure we have enough copies of new titles on hand to satisfy the demand, and I am very pleased to be able to give people more time to enjoy reading in a more leisurely manner. |
Spotlight On: New Staff Members ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next time you visit the Library, you may see some new faces. Because of the retirement of longtime Audiovisual Manager, Heather Collier, former Head of Circulation, Melissa Friedman, will be taking over her duties and we will welcome Librarian Karen Tatarka as our new manager of the Circulation Department. Karen received her Master of Library Science degree from Southern Connecticut State University and was awarded her Master of Arts, English and Bachelor of Arts, English by Fordham University. Previously employed by publisher Thomson-Gale and the University of Connecticut (Stamford) Library, Karen is well-versed in many aspects of libraries and literature and we know she will be a wonderful addition to our administrative team.
In addition, we welcome new full-time Children's Library Assistant Emily Arsenault to the increasingly busy Childrens Department. Emily has recently returned to Connecticut from South Africa, where she worked in library development in rural schools as a Peace Corps volunteer. Previously, she worked as a high school English teacher and as an assistant editor at the Merriam-Webster Company. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College and received her Teaching Certification from St. Joseph College in West Hartford. Emily has already proven to be a terrific addition to the creative and productive Children's Library staff. We are most fortunate to have these two young women on board. Please stop by and meet them next time you visit! |
Hot and Cool Jazz on August 26th ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Triple Play, the blues funk band with Peter "Madcat Ruth," Chris Brubeck, and Joel Brown, has been described as a combination of "quick- stepping trombone, roadhouse guitar and good-time harmonica" by AllAboutJazz.com in reference to the band's 2006 Monterey Jazz Festival appearance. The band has played previously to packed crowds at Wilton Library events. Their appearance on Sunday, August 26th, from 3 to 4 pm, in the Brubeck Room is sure to be a sellout, so reserve your seat(s) immediately.
Hot and Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room is funded by the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer. Advance registration is suggested and pre-registrants must arrive by 2:50 pm to be guaranteed seating. After 3 pm, and if space is available, waitlisted and walk-in registrants will be admitted. The suggested donation for this performance ($10 per person) will be used to fund future musical performances of all sorts at the Library. A special note for jazz lovers: Triple Play will attend a reception to follow the performance in honor of jazz legend and fellow Wiltonian, Dave Brubeck. We are so pleased to have been chosen as a site for the University of the Pacific Library traveling multimedia exhibition entitled The Times of Dave Brubeck. This exhibit will be on view at the Library from Thursday, August 16th, through Sunday, September 16th alternately in the Brubeck Room and our entry Gallery and we urge you all to stop by to focus on Dave Brubeck's contributions to jazz and classical music, his involvement in civil rights issues, and his role in cultural ambassadorship programs that used jazz to improve relations between the United States and other countries. Thanks are due again to the William and Karen Tell Foundation for making the traveling exhibit's visit to Wilton possible. And a " save the date" for you all: our next Hot and Cool Jazz event will take place on Sunday, September 9th, at 5 pm when famed singer-pianist Dena DeRose takes the stage with her singular style and compelling creativity. You should register now to save yourself a seat - she is simply remarkable! |
Young Readers Round-up Week ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Special attention will be given to our Young Readers from Monday, August 27th through Thursday, August 30th in the Children's Library. Programs each morning that week will welcome kids to the Library and we hope they will officially join hundreds of other Young Readers who have signed up as official Wilton Library Lovers ($25 per child or $75 per family)!
New Young Readers will receive our hippo book bag and a special card that allows them to borrow children's DVDs for an extended 7-day period. Please call the Library at 762-3950, extension 216, for details. |
Special Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although it is impossible to adequately thank all who donate money, time and services to the Library each month, I'd like to mention a few recent gifts:
