Greetings!
We are moving ahead with expansion plans, refining the public/private
partnership proposal for the Town, speaking to community groups, and scheduling
open houses here at the Library to answer questions about the design for
our new building.
If you missed the wonderful article in the Wilton Villager a couple of weeks
ago, come in and ask for a copy - Villager Editor Donna Bertoli did a very
articulate and informative interview with Architect Rsyzard Szczypek of Tai
Soo Kim Partners that we are sure you will enjoy.
Our Building Committee meetings are open to the public, and we encourage you
to drop by the Library on February 6th at 7:30 pm if you would like to observe
or ask questions.
February
Art Exhibit - Whyte on Wings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Andrew Whyte's aviation illustrations will hang throughout the
Library during the month of February. Join us for the opening reception
from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 2nd. The artist will be
present and refreshments will be served.
Wilton
Creative WaterWorks on March 29th - Save the Date!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since the summer, we have been engaged in a wonderful collaboration
with the Wilton Public Schools that will culminate in a community event
to benefit the Library. Gifted musician and composer Chris Brubeck is currently
creating a work of music that will be performed on the stage at the Wilton
High School Performing Arts Center at 5:00 pm on March 29th as part of
the third annual Wilton Library Evening of the Arts celebration. Hundreds
of poems on the subject of water and watersheds were submitted by Wilton
K-12 students this fall for consideration by a panel of judges. Chris has
been inspired by the words of these young poets and their words will be
spoken and sung by student and professional performers accompanied by an
orchestra he has assembled. As in past years, dinners and cocktail parties
at the homes of generous guests will round out the evening for those who
choose to attend following this festival of creativity celebrating our
children's talent and their awareness of our environment. For more information,
please call the Library at 762-3950.
The
Play's the Thing - Playwright David Wiltse
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
February 2nd at 2:00 pm, the Library will hold the third in a multi-part
series of Sunday talks featuring actors, critics, and playwrights. Acclaimed
novelist and Drama Desk award-winner David Wiltse (Doubles, Temporary Help,
Triangles for Two, among others) will talk about his plays and the people
with whom he has worked.
Look for more "Play's the Thing" sessions in March! Thanks to A&E Television Networks for their generous sponsorship of this series. It has afforded all who attend with a true "behind the scenes" view of performing arts and the creative process.
Ann
Martin Returns
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning on Monday, February 3 and continuing February 10, 24,
March 3,10 and 17, guest lecturer Ann Martin will explore the Development
of British Theater in the 20th Century. Sessions will run from 10:30 am
to noon in the Library's Community Room and advance registration is required.
Playwrights Wilde, Coward, Shaw, Eliot, Beckett, Osborne and Stoppard will
be discussed. Ann's seminars are tremendously popular and filled with lively
discussion - if you haven't yet taken part in one, you are in for a treat!
Computer
Classes on Internet Skills and Microsoft Word
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Computer guru Mary Anne Franco will lead a hands-on class in basic
Internet skills on Wednesday, February 5th, from 8:30-10 am. Prospective
students need no Internet experience, but should know how to use a mouse.
Mary Anne will teach her students basic Microsoft Word on Wednesday, February
19th, from 8:30 to 10 am.
Students should register in advance as space is limited and the classes are extremely popular. There is a fee of $15 for Friends of the Library and $20 for others (proceeds help to fund future programs). Come benefit from these user friendly learning sessions before hours in the Reference Area of the Library.
USA
PATRIOT Act - Bad Big Brother or Good Uncle Sam?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shortly after September 11, 2001, a Federal Act was passed in the
name of national security that has potentially serious implications for
us all. Join members of the League of Women Voters and the Wilton Library
staff and Trustees as we hear a panel of experts discuss the provisions
of the Act, its role in preventing terrorist activities and the danger
it may pose to individual rights to privacy. There is nothing academic
about this debate - your own welfare and rights are at stake. Come to the
Library on Thursday night, February 20th at 7:30 pm to learn more from
representatives from the Connecticut ACLU, the State Attorney General's
office, and from Wilton resident George Nichols, Director of Human Resources & Legal
Affairs at the Ferguson Library in Stamford.
