-- Emergency Email Notification System Hello!Things are heating up at the Library this month, with closings and openings, moves and more. We will do our best to keep you informed about the schedule as the construction project continues. Look for construction updates in The Wilton Bulletin and news in The Wilton Villager. In addition, should there be last minute changes, we will put messages on our website and broadcast information to our subscribers via special editions of librarEmail.We thank you for your patience and count on you to borrow lots to keep you reading, viewing and listening during the weeks all or part of the library is closed in July. No late fees will be charged during the month, but all items due July 1st to July 31st must come back to us on August 1st in order to take advantage of the amnesty period. We do hope you will return items you have out so that they may be available for others and you may do so throughout the month of July at our new drive-thru window (opening July 14th) or the drop box in the parking lot (available all month). If you have any questions about what parts of the Library are open, what books, audiobooks and videos/DVDs are accessible, please give me a call at 762-3950 x215. I will be working throughout the month along with most of the staff to guarantee a smooth transition from the old to the new!

Sincerely,
Kathy Leeds, Director

Summer Reading: Passport to Adventure!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have a tremendously exciting lineup of entertainments and crafts for kids, thanks to a generous sponsorship once again by Rick Donegan and the folks at Stop & Shop! There's no reason to sit at home when you're not reading, since so much will be going on at the Library.
Stop by our very own Passport Booth (compliments of Lesley Keogh and her family!) to get your picture taken and your passport stamped for every book you read this summer. We'll keep your passport on file to record your reading and then it will be yours to keep at the end of the summer.
Attend our crafts programs on Thursdays from 3- 4 pm if you are between 3 and 7 years old - each one will follow the theme of our Summer Reading Program:
  • July 14th - Antarctic Antics
  • July 21st - Native Americans
  • July 28th - Down Under
There is a small materials charge for these sessions ($5 per child/$4 for Young Readers), and advance registration is required, so please call 762-3950 or register online. Our Passport to Adventure entertainments feature performers from all over the world!
  • Wednesday, July 20th at 1 pm
    ACROSS THE AMERICAS
    Roger Tincknell presents a multicultural folk music journey from Canada to South America with singing, dancing and a variety of instruments. Can you sing in Spanish or French? Here's your chance to give it a try! Friday July 22nd at 2 pm
    WON-LDY PAYE, Liberian Storyteller
    Just where is Liberia? Somewhere in Africa! Come and find out more as Mr. Paye tells the adventures of people and animals through stories passed down from his grandmother. Wednesday, July 27th at 2 pm
    THE LOST ARK
    Back by popular demand, Lesa Schiefle brings her many animals to share with you. Yes, live animals! Lots to see and learn in this popular program. Friday, July 29th at 2 pm
    MOHEGAN TRIBE OF CONNECTICUT
    Shane Long will share the Native American traditions from our very own state of Connecticut. You might just be able to learn a Native American dance!
  • Thursday, August 4th at 2 pm
    THE IRISH MINSTREL with Richard Stillman
    Have you wondered how those bagpipes work or what an Irish hornpipe sounds like? Come on down and join the fun! You'll be dancing in the aisles!
There is no charge for the entertainments, but advance registration by phone (762-3950) or online is required.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Midnight Madness
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On the night of July 15th at 12:00 am, children, teens and adults all over the world will be waiting for a long anticipated event: the sixth book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, by J.K.Rowling, will go on sale!

The Wilton Library will also be celebrating the book's publication at a late night program for kids 8-13 years old. From 11:30 pm to 12:30 am, there will be entertainment, a raffle, refreshments, games and a grand countdown (at 12:00 midnight!). Copies of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be available to purchase at the Children's Circulation Desk. Children (and adults!) are encouraged to wear costumes to celebrate Harry and his friends ... and enemies. Although there is no charge for the program, registration is definitely required and children must attend with an adult. Please call the Library (762-3950), stop by and register or register online.

Summer Music & More Courtyard Concerts in June and July
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even though parts of the Library may be closed, it will be fabulous "business as usual" for Thursday evenings in late June and July! Each of the following Thursday evenings, from 5-6:30 pm, you are all invited to what has become, thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Village Market, a true Wilton tradition. Young and old will enjoy free refreshments (with wine donated by Michael Crystal for those "of age") and concerts. Performing this summer are:
  • June 30th - Chance Browne and his blues band July 7th - teen band Flooded & Friends July 14th - Jeff Harding (WHS '94 grad) - acoustic rock
  • July 21st - Bob Riccio and his rock 'n roll band Kix
Stop by - on your way to the Market or your way home from work - it's a great Wilton way to spend your time, meet your friends and neighbors, and enjoy a special part of summer!
July Schedule Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The currently planned July (and beyond) schedule for construction and closings at the Library is as follows: Monday July 5th - Wednesday July 13th Library is entirely closed so that we can move the Children's collections to their new home on the ground floor of the expansion.

Thursday July 14th - Sunday July 31st The expansion is open during normal Library hours, with Children's Library, Circulation Desk, Drive-thru Window, Meeting Rooms and Offices operating in full swing. We will have large-print books, some DVDs and new books from the Adult collection available as space allows. Please note that Internet access and access to most of our adult and teen collections will be unavailable for July.

August 1st - Major renovations of the old building will be complete and the Adult/Teen side of the expanded Library will reopen with minor renovations and moves not necessitating closings to take place throughout the fall. Work will continue on the Northeast Addition and the Brubeck Room until December.

On Our Wishlist: Encyclopedia of 20th-Century Architecture
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From time to time, we ask you to consider giving a resource that would significantly enhance our collection, but one that is not within our usual means to acquire. The Encyclopedia of 20th-Century Architecture, edited by R. Stephen Sennott, is just such a work. The publisher's description of the book says it all: "Focusing on architecture from all regions of the world, this three-volume set profiles the century's vast chronicle of architectural achievements, both within and well beyond the theoretical confines of modernism. Unlike existing works, this encyclopedia examines the complexities of rapidly changing global conditions that have dispersed modern architectural types, movements, styles, and building practices across traditional geographic and cultural boundaries. An international team of 300 writers--architectural historians, architects, engineers, preservationists, urban historians, critics, and scholars--presents a comprehensive and critical assessment of buildings, architects, cities, and numerous related topics. In addition to a list of further readings, essays are supported with photographs as well as architectural drawings and plans.
With 700 cross-referenced articles, this encyclopedia provides experts and general readers alike with an integrated view of the practice of architecture around the world in the twentieth century."
If you would like to add this wonderful reference work to the Wilton Library collection, simply send your check for $450 to my attention or drop it off at the front desk. We'll be pleased to place a bookplate inside the front cover, acknowledging your gift and/or honoring or memorializing a loved one, should you wish us to do so. Please contact me via email or by phone (762-3950 x215), should you have any questions about the book or its donation.
