Greetings!

Welcome to you all and particularly to those friends who are receiving Wilton Library's librarEmail for the first time. Reactions I have gotten from newly subscribed friends have been uniformly positive, but should you wish to unsubscribe at any time from my monthly update, please feel free to email me at kcleeds@wiltonlibrary.org or use the directions for unsubscribing at the end of each newsletter.

We now have over 1,100 subscribers and I am hoping to triple that number within the next year, so please encourage anyone you know who might like to keep up with what's happening at the Library to sign up on our homepage (www.wiltonlibrary .org) or by emailing me a subscription request.

Expansion News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
June will be an exciting month for the Library as we not only mark the end of our year at the Annual Meeting, but also mark the beginning of our future in a grand groundbreaking ceremony on June 13th. Please come and celebrate a remarkable year with us from 4 to 5, then lift a glass (or a shovel) to salute the start of construction in a ceremony following the short business meeting. What a wonderful moment it will be for all who have contributed their time, their votes and their financial support to our expansion.
On the following day and coincidental with the start of our summer reading program, we will initiate a special opportunity for kids to be part of the expansion process. Children and teens will be able to donate "Change for Change" this summer and throughout the fall, investing in their future at the Wilton Library. Construction Zone! - the theme of our summer reading program - will take on a whole new meaning for those of all ages as we watch the walls go up over the coming months and feel a part of the construction team.
Construction Zone! Summer Reading Program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning on June 14th and continuing through the summer, this summer's reading program for kids will feature craft programs, entertainments, drop-in story times and reading of thousands of books in June, July and August. Kids can stop by the Children's Area to register and color in a "Construction Zone" poster for their reading stickers and to sign up for programs. Last year more than 400 children read over 6,600 books during the summer - our highest number ever! A flyer with information on all the exciting things going on will be distributed at the Memorial Day Parade, in school folders, and in the Library during the summer months. We are so grateful to Rick Donegan and the folks at Stop & Shop for once again sponsoring the terrific lineup of activities.

In June, Construction Zone craft sessions and entertainments will include:

  • Wednesday, June 23, 2 pm - AirborneJugglers, a juggling show and workshop (separate registration required, workshop fee $5/$4 Young Readers) for ages 5 and up
  • Thursday, June 24, 2 pm - Raise the Roof craft program for ages 3-6 (materials fee $5/$4 Young Readers)
  • Thursday, June 24, 3:30 pm - Raise the Roof craft program for ages 7-10 (materials fee $5/$4 Young Readers)
  • Wednesday, June 30, 2 pm - Bubblemania with Casey Carle for all ages, children under 5 must be accompanied by a parent

Teddy Bear Picnic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One- and two-year-olds, their teddy bears and their parents are invited to join our own Lesley Keogh for a wonderful Teddy Bear Picnic on Monday, June 28th from 10:30-11:15 am. The highly popular program will include stories, songs and refreshments.
On Exhibit in June: Constance Evans
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Constance Evans, Executive Director of Weir Farm and an extremely talented artist in her own right, will show her dramatic landscapes and architectural elements rendered in charcoal drawings and mixed media prints from Sunday, June 6th through Wednesday, June 30th. You are all invited to join us for a light brunch at her opening reception at the Library from 11:30 am to 1 pm on June 6th. A percentage of all sales from this show help us to host programs and purchase materials for our wonderful collection of books and videos about art, art instruction, and artists, so bring your checkbooks or credit cards!

Operation Respect Film Series Continues in June
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The highly acclaimed film discussion series begun in May will continue this month on June 2nd at 7 pm with a showing of clips from Gentleman's Agreement, starring Gregory Peck. Moderators Rabbi Leah Cohen and Louis Haber of Temple B'nai Chaim will moderate a discussion about the classic about a writer assigned to write about anti-Semitism who decides to pose as a Jew and discovers what
it's like to be a victim of religious intolerance.
On Monday, June 7th at 7 pm, we will show Last Chance for Eden, a documentary about society's stereotypes and the impact they have on the personal relationships and workplace interactions of eight men and women. Middlebrook Dean Patrick Chang and State Department of Education Consultant Bill Howe will join renowned documentary director Lee Mun Wah in leading a discussion following the film. We are most grateful to Lee Mun Wah for flying in from California at no cost to the Library to attend this session and to Four Points by Sheraton on Route 7 for sponsoring his stay.
The series is sponsored by Wilton PTA Council, Wilton Education Foundation and the Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the Betsy and Jesse Fink Foundation and is open to all ages. Registration is strongly suggested - because of the popularity of the series and space limitations, we need to be able to plan for a change of venue, should it become necessary. Please join us for these life- and mind- changing programs.
Attention All College-Bound Students and Their Parents!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Did you know that the formats of the PSAT and SAT are changing next year? Are you prepared for the changes? Join us on Wednesday, June 9th at 7 pm to learn more about the following:
  • A student-written essay
  • Analogies eliminated
  • Shorter reading passages added
  • New content from third-year college preparatory math
  • Quantitative Comparisons eliminated

So that they will be prepared to do their best, high school sophomores (Class of 2006) and freshmen (Class of 2007) are invited to hear testing service consultant Dan Hughes talk about the changes and how to prepare for them. The timing is right to plan for taking these tests next year - and we are glad to be able to provide this information to parents and students free of charge.

Shakespeare on the Sound for Families
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever taken advantage of the summer Shakespeare performance in Rowayton? I heartily recommend that you pack your picnic and take the whole family to see a free performance of A Winter's Tale this summer! But before you go, come to the Wilton Library to hear Tom Lee tell the story for kids in grades 3-8 and their families. On Thursday, June 24th from 7-8 pm, Tom will perform Shakespeare's tale in a way that will make the play more understood - and enjoyed - by those of all ages.
The play itself runs June 17th through July 4th and you can call Shakespeare on the Sound at 203.299.1300 for more information.
The Amistad Arrives in Stamford
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Since her launch in 2000, Amistad has made a direct and lasting impact in the communities she has visited and indirectly touched the lives of millions through educational programs, newspaper articles, the Internet and radio and television interviews with the captain or crew. From June 5th to 12th this year she will visit Stamford Harbor.

Join us at the Wilton Library on Thursday night, June 10th from 6-7:30 pm to see a presentation and film about the ship, its history, and its relevance for our lives today.

Wadsworth Athenem Museum of Art Tour for Volunteers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hundreds of volunteers work each year on projects for the Wilton Library and it is our very special pleasure to invite them all on Wednesday, June 16th, to a wine and cheese reception and a program following the reception featuring Willard Holmes, Director of the Wadswoth Atheneum Museum of Art. Mr. Holmes will talk about the permanent collection and current exhibits at the Wadsworth - a Connecticut treasure in our own back yard.
The reception will start at 7 pm and be followed by the program at 7:30 pm. Please join us for both if you are able! All are welcome, and together we will pay special tribute to our volunteers that evening.
Bus Trip to the Met
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On June 29th, the Library and St. Matthew's Episcopal church will cosponsor a bus trip to the outstanding special exhibit on Byzantine civilization currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This major international loan exhibition demonstrates the artistic and cultural significance of the last centuries of the state that called itself "the Empire of the Romans."

We will meet in the parking lot of St. Matthew's Church at 9 am and return to Wilton by 4 pm. Lunch and museum admission are individually payable, as is the audiotour charge.

The cost of transportation is $30 round trip and advance registration and payment are required. Space is limited, so get your reservation in today.
