-- Special Thanks! Hello!Summer is almost here and, although so many things are changing at the Library, I am happy to announce that two of our most popular summer offerings will remain on the calendar, despite the fast-moving construction schedule! First, thanks to our generous friends at the Village Market, the Summer Music and More Concert Series will take place once again in the Library's entry courtyard (although perhaps in that location for the last time) on Thursday evenings from 5-6:30 pm. Bring your parents, your children, or stop by on your way home from work to enjoy free music, dancing and refreshments - it's a true Wilton happening! The schedule of performers is:

  • June 30th ~ Chance Brown and his blues band July 7th ~ Flooded (teen band) July 14th ~ Jeff Harding (acoustic rock)
  • July 21st ~ Bob Riccio and his rock & roll band, Kix

Second, our amazing summer reading program for kids will kick off on June 15th and an exciting roster of events is planned to provide participants with their own Passport to Adventure. This summer's theme is intended to instill a love of books, reading and learning about other cultures and we are pleased to present entertainments, craft programs and drop-in story times throughout the summer months. Great thanks to Stop & Shop for sponsoring the Passport to Adventure program!

Sincerely,
Kathy Leeds, Director

Expansion News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Tremendous progress has been made during May, most of which is visible only inside the new structure where most windows, lights and ceilings have been put in place and interior walls are taped and painted. Outside, the brickwork and backfilling continue, with the award for most spectacular event of the month going to the demolition of the Wilton History and Music rooms. We sustained a one-day closure on May 16th to allow CL&P to switch power from the temporary source used during construction to the new permanent supply lines that will serve us for the future.
This coming month will bring the installation of our elevator, bathroom tile, flooring and floorcovering and final touches to make the building ready for furnishings and fixtures. Please stop by for a "hard hat tour" on Wednesdays in June at 5 pm! I will meet you in the lobby promptly at 5 and the tour takes about 20 minutes.
As I write these words, we are still on target to close the entire Library from July 5th through the 11th (to move the children's collections to their new home), open the two-story addition, new entrance and drive- up window on July 12th, and reopen the entire Library on July 25th when major renovations have been completed. Work will continue along the north side of the building throughout the fall, finishing the project finally in December. Stay tuned for confirmation of dates and more details about the temporary closures.
Computer Clinic: Protecting Your Computer from Predators
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Computer guru and Wilton Bulletin columnist Roger Giler will show us all how to guard our data, programs and hardware in a session from 10 to 11:30 am on Saturday, June 4th, in the Community Room. As we know all too well, viruses and spyware can slow computer function or bring it to a screeching halt. Find out how to keep everything safe and surging along during his popular demonstration/question & answer session. Advance registration is requested online or by phone (762-3950).

Discover your neighborhood and beyond...

This summer is a wonderful time to take advantage of our Museum Pass Program for families. You'll be able to explore many nearby resources at reduced rates or no admission charge at all, simply by stopping by to pick up a pass at the Library's Circulation Desk.

Our current participating institutions are:

Each pass may be reserved up to one month in advance by calling the Library at 762-3950 or by signing up at the Circulation Desk. It will be loaned for three consecutive days at no cost, but a late fee of $5 a day will be charged if the pass is not returned on time (this allows us to make sure that subsequent reservations are honored). Our patrons are responsible for any charges beyond those included with the pass (these vary from museum to museum and may include a reduced admission fee, parking, etc.).

College Application Angst - How to Cope
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Join us on Thursday night, June 2nd, at 7:30 pm in the Community Room to hear Janet Bertoldi, PhD., examine issues that many parents and their college- bound teenagers face during senior year. I remember vividly the stress the application and selection process put on our family when our children were applying to schools and wish we'd been able to benefit from this sort of program. Dr. Bertoldi, part of the Yale University Health Services team, will cover anxiety over the college application process, teenage procrastination, balancing parent involvement, "senioritis," and handling acceptance and rejection letters.
Be forewarned and forearmed! Register now to reserve your place for what is sure to be a popular program online, in person, or by phone (762-3950).
Ben Van Vechten and the Poet's Voice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For those of you who love poetry but have not been able to attend one of Ben Van Vechten's marvelous poetry seminars at the Library, we have a treat in store. On Sunday, June 5th, from 2-3 pm, Ben will lecture and lead a discussion on how the poet speaks to his reader or listener. Entitled The Voice in the Poem, this session will be based on a packet of poems that is available for advance reading. Please stop by to pick up your collection while supplies last. You may register in person, online or by phone (762-3950).

Wilton Library Association Annual Meeting - June 12th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you know, the Wilton Library is a private, nonprofit organization that provides public library service for the Town of Wilton. Each year in June we hold our Annual Meeting to elect officers and trustees, honor retiring trustees, review our year and generally provide an accounting to our membership (all who make financial contributions to the Wilton Library Association) of the operations and finances of the Library. This year's meeting will be held on Sunday, June 12th at 4 pm, and will include two special highlights: a "hard hat tour" of the almost completed two-story addition for all who wish to check out the progress, and a performance by award-winning audio book narrator George Guidall!
If you are an audio book lover, you undoubtedly have heard Mr. Guidall, for he has narrated more than 850 unabridged books - more than most people read in a lifetime. AudioFile magazine reports, "One of the most gratifying parts of his job is reading in front of an audience. It's humbling, too, because listeners tell him how much they appreciate his performances. " Having heard George perform both on my car tape and CD players for years as well as recently in person, I can assure you that there is much to appreciate!
Please join us on June 12th at 4 pm for an exciting and entertaining celebration!
Garden Literature with Daryl Beyers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Tuesday, June 14th, from 7-8:30 pm, we will be proud to present Daryl Beyers lecturing on the topic of how gardens and horticulture invariably inform and inspire important works of literature. Authors Jamaica Kincaid, Beverly Nichols and Karel Kapek are among those who have contributed to the realm of garden writing as a literary genre. Mr. Byers is a garden writer himself who lectures and teaches at the New York Botanical Garden. If you love books - and/or gardens - please register in advance in person, online or by phone (762-3950) to attend this delightful discussion.

Bus Trip to The Cloisters - Waiting List Only
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In collaboration with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the Library will offer a lecture, bus trip and tour of The Cloisters in New York City on Thursday, June 16th.
This very special day will begin at 9 am for participants with coffee and pastries at the Library as we listen to noted art lecturer Joan Kaskell tell us about the works of art we are about to view (for a preview of some, click here). Joan is a favorite of mine (and I am not alone!) as she brings historical perspective, meaning and a touch of humor to every talk she does for us. We'll board our "mini-coach" at 10 am to arrive in time for a guided tour of the museum at 11:30 am. Lunch will follow - on our own (you may wish to join us at the New Leaf Cafe just a 5-minute walk from the museum grounds, or bring your own bag lunch to enjoy). We'll return to the museum to browse its offerings as we wish (admission includes an audioguide) until the bus departs at 3:30 pm to arrive back in Wilton by about 5 pm.
The price of $40 per person includes our lecture at the Library, transportation, admission fee, and both guided and audio tours of the museum. We are completely full for the trip at this time, but you can place your name on a waiting list - just call 762-3950 or stop by the Circulation Desk.
A Family Tempest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shakespeare on the Sound in Rowayton is producing The Tempest this year for audiences young and old on the banks of the nearby Five Mile River in Pinkney Park. We have arranged to have popular storyteller Tom Lee give a rendition of the story at our Library for 3rd through 8th graders and their families on Thursday, June 23rd from 7-8 pm.

According to Shakespeare on the Sound, "Artistic Director Ezra Barnes describes The Tempest, Shakespeare's last play, as a fantastical romance set on an undiscovered island where Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan, and his daughter Miranda have lived for years since his evil brother usurped his dukedom. A magician capable of summoning storms and demons, Prospero has plotted his revenge for years. When the tempest he creates shipwrecks his usurpers on the isle, he can finally extract his vengeance. Both aided and abetted by his magical sprite Ariel and his slave, the indigenous Caliban, the play is ultimately a struggle for power between Prospero's divided selves - his better half of mercy and his worse half of retribution. The play features wonderful magic and vivid characters, beautiful language and some of Shakespeare's most haunting songs. The evil, deformed, yet pitiful Caliban, the mercurial Ariel, the young lovers Miranda and Ferdinand, the clowns Trinculo and Stephano and the majestic Prospero make up one of Shakespeare's most memorable ensembles."

Don't miss this opportunity to foster your children's appreciation of Shakespeare and his works! The performances at Shakespeare on the Sound run from June 16th to July 3rd. Register for our program on June 23rd in person, by calling 762-3950, or online.

BOOK SALE HELP NEEDED!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our book sale chairmen are looking for two groups of volunteers:
  • The first is a group of approximately 20 people who would be willing to come to The Book Cellar - our new space in the basement of the new library building - on Monday and/or Thursday mornings when in town and when available (certainly for no more than two hours at a time). Their job would be to cull through the books that have been donated to the Library and sort them into subject categories. This is not a weekly commitment, as there would never be work for all 20 people; the hope is that 3 - 4 might be available for each sorting session.
  • The second group of volunteers would be a team of people who are interested in a specific book category or categories, who would come in on their own schedule to price the sorted books.
For those who can, there will be a short meeting at the Library with our book sale experts Pat Curran and Shirley Robbins on Monday, June 6th at 10 am to learn the ropes and ask questions. Sorting work would actually begin immediately after July 1st. Please email Chairman Jan MacEwen if you would like to help us!
Special Thanks!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although it is impossible to adequately thank all who donate money, time and services to the Library each month, I'd like to mention a few recent gifts:
  • Thanks to Bob Russell for his gift of The Oxford History of Western Music, requested for the collection in a previous newsletter. Thanks to Jeffrey Reicker for his gift of a year of the Journal of American Medicine, also recently requested. Thanks to Alice Ayers for renewing our subscription to the DAR's American Spirit Magazine. Thanks to Howard and Matthew Greene for donating a DVD of their Paying for College and a videotape of Ten Steps to College with the Greenes. Thanks - as always - to two wonderful Business Friends: Stewart Flowers, for our lovely weekly arrangements and Prosperous Printing for production of our monthly program mailer. Thanks to all the individuals and businesses that gave in response to our second annual appeal mailing. We are very close to our target for the year, so if you have not yet given to support our collections and technology, please put us "over the top" with your contribution! Thanks to the recent gift to our Building Fund made by the Golf Digest Companies!
  • Thanks to all those who have made contributions in memory of our dear friend, Dr. John Pool.
