Expansion
News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This month is a big month for the Library expansion. On Tuesday,
May 6th, after the Annual Meeting (which starts at 7:30 p.m.) and then
on Saturday, May 10th during the extended voting hours from 9 a.m.
to 6 p.m., voters will have the opportunity to approve the appropriation
of $4.8 million for the project (both at the Performing Arts Center
at Wilton High School).
The Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance have enthusiastically recommended support and we urge you all not only to vote, but also to call on your friends and neighbors to get to the polls and register their approval. We hope for a resounding "vote of confidence" for this exciting and well planned expansion and renovation. It will have such a positive impact on our Center and on the community as a whole.
May
Art - Wilton School FAPA Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every year we look forward to this wonderful showing of the
various and impressive talents of students in our school system. All
month the walls in the Library will be hung with art (sometimes the
ceilings are adorned as well!) and sculpture will be displayed on tops
of shelves in the Adult Services area. Our reception on Monday, May
5th, from 6 to 8 p.m., will feature musical performances and refreshments
for attendees. The Exhibit runs through May 27th and includes more
than 400 pieces by students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Join
us!
Ben
Van Vechten Short Stories
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With its first session held in April, this most recent of Ben
Van Vechten's seminars will cover a number of wonderful short stories
(binders are available for use throughout the series for a nominal
$5 rental fee). The room was packed for Ben's first meeting, but a
little crunch is worth the effort to enjoy the lively and literate
discussion and analysis. Sessions two through five will be held from
10:30 a.m. - 12 noon on Thursdays, May 1, 8, 15 and 22. Stop at the
Front Desk to register and get your binder.
Musical
Interlude with Diane Wittry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Diane Wittry, the new music director and conductor of the Norwalk
Symphony Orchestra is a wonderfully energetic and knowledgeable speaker,
as the audience will discover at the Library on Sunday, May 4th from
2 to 3 p.m. Diane was hired last summer to lead the Orchestra and has
delighted audiences ever since. Come meet this entertaining and talented
performer.
Computer
Classes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Computer guru Mary Anne Franco will lead a hands-on class in
basic Internet skills on Wednesday, May 7th, from 8:30-10 am. Prospective
students need no Internet experience, but should know how to use a
mouse. Mary Anne will teach her students intermediate Microsoft Word
skills on Wednesday, May 21st, from 8:30 to 10 am.
Students should register in advance as space is limited and the classes are extremely popular. There is a fee of $15 for Friends of the Library and $20 for others (proceeds help to fund future programs). Come benefit from these user friendly learning sessions before hours in the Reference Area of the Library.
Women's
Night Out - A New Series
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday evenings in May are going to be a real treat for those
who come to the Library. We'll have wine and cheese and a rainbow of
interesting seminars:

- May 15th - Dr. Sally Bergwerk will speak on the myths (and facts) about menopause
- May 22nd - June Fagan, an owner of Wilton Curves for Women, will teach self-defense basics
- May 29th - Author Jeanne Dallman will speak about choosing clothing and accessories (attire feng shui!)
Join us for these interesting seminars - and bring a friend or two to enjoy the refreshments and information with you! All sessions will begin at 7 p.m. in the Community Room and advance registration is suggested.
Garden
Club Plant Sale - May 10, 9am-1pm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those who attend the Garden Club's sale each year know what
a wonderful assortment of plants, shrubs and gift items are going to
be available. This year, a portion of the proceeds of this highly successful
event will benefit the Library's Building Fund. Thank you, Wilton Garden
Club members - we are most appreciative of your continuing support!
Wilton History with Bob Russell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Wednesday night, May 14th at 7 p.m., Bob Russell will lead
another of his wonderfully popular talks on Wilton Center's history
and the businesses that formed the core of our commerce a century or
more ago. Bob is currently writing a history of the Town (rumor has
it that final editing has begun!) and, with his wife Carol, is an acknowledged
authority on Wilton's past.
If you haven't yet seen the terrific video made about that past last year in honor of the Town's Bicentennial celebration, "Recollections and Remembrances," stop by the Library to borrow or buy a copy. Also available are the full interviews with individuals that were used to make the final show. Bob and Carol are a terrific resource for Wilton and we look forward to the latest in Bob's series of seminars on Wilton's history on May 14th.
Women@Work
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Women reentering the workplace will learn about current market
trends, ways to renter the workforce, and how to network with other
women to find opportunities and get support. Kathryn Sollmann will
lead the free seminar form 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20th
in the Library's Community Room. This will be an enjoyable and enlightening
session that may well open doors and lead to new paths for those who
attend.
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast - Contemporary Art Discussion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All Wilton Library volunteers are invited to a breakfast reception,
Wednesday, May 21, from 9 to 10 a.m. in our lobby and then a wonderful
program on understanding contemporary art by speaker Pat Barratt, museum
educator from The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield.
The program from 10 to 11 a.m. is open to the public and all are encouraged
to attend to hear Pat's talk. The Aldrich is a terrific local treasure
and its staff makes modern art accessible through exhibits, lectures
and educational outreach.
Book Discussions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wilton Library Readers will talk about Richard Russo's "Straight
Man" on Wednesday, May 14th from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. under the guidance
of our talented discussion leader, Susan Boyar. Bring your lunch!
Seniors will discuss "Wasn't the Grass Greener," by Barbara Holland, led by
Library staff member Barbara Jones at the Senior Center at 11 a.m. Call 834-6240
to register.
Multiple copies of both titles are available at the Library. Call
ahead to reserve one or reserve it online! Don't forget to check our "Book
Group Books" shelves to see titles that other clubs are reading in
town - you may be inspired! They are located just behind the Reference
Desk in Adult Services.
Memorial Day Happenings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Look for the Wilton Library marchers at the Wilton Memorial Day Parade
on Monday, May 25th - we will be handing out leaflets and wearing costumes
to announce the 2003 Summer Reading Program (sponsored again this year by our
neighbor, Stop & Shop)! The theme this summer is "Animalia" and animals of
all kinds will be part of the entertainments in June and July. Kids - make
sure you check the schedule for great crafts and shows -- and get ready to
READ hundreds of books this summer!
Also in observance of Memorial Day, the Library will be closed Sunday,
May 25th and Monday, May 26th.
