Hello to Our Friends

Expansion News!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Representatives of the Library Board of Trustees will appear before the Board of Finance on November 19th to present the latest information on the Library's planned expansion. Presentations have been made to the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, and the Garden Club. If you would like to see the most recent plans or would like to view the video yourself - or if you'd like to arrange for us to come speak to your organization or company about the plans, please call me (762-3950) or e-mail (kcleeds@wiltonlibrary.org). We will have a three dimensional model of the project on exhibit at the end of the month, so be sure to stop by and let us know what you think of it!
More on Our Flag Sculpture
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The generosity keeps flying with our Flag. As you may know, eleven local businesses and individuals came together to purchase Rick Parisot's Flag for the Library. Its dedication took place on September 11, 2002, to thank our donors and reflect on the events of the past year (the flag has 9 stripes and 11 stars escaping from the field of stars - commemorating the tragic date). Lucci Electric and R.J. Davis Excavating have just completed the work necessary to illuminate the Flag at night and have donated both the materials and the labor to complete the job. We are tremendously touched and grateful for this generous gesture - one that has created a lasting landmark for our community and is a symbol of the spirit of our town. Drive by and take a look!

Computer Classes in November
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Mary Anne Franco will lead a hands-on class in basic Internet skills on Wednesday, November 6th, from 8:30-10 am. Prospective students need no Internet experience, but should know how to use a mouse. Mary Anne will teach her students basic Microsoft Word on Wednesday, November 20th, from 8:30 to 10 am.
Students should register in advance as space is limited and there is a fee of $15 for Friends of the Library and $20 for others (proceeds help to fund future programs). Come benefit from these user friendly learning sessions before hours in the Reference Area of the Library.
November Art Exhibit: Pemberton and Equale
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jeff Pemberton's photography and Michele Equale's paintings will share the exhibit space at the Library during November. Join us for the opening reception from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 3rd. The artists will be present and refreshments will be served. Works will be offered for sale throughout the month with a portion of the proceeds given to purchase art books for our collection.

A Feast of Author Talks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
November is a feast of author talks at the Library:
  • On Sunday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m., John Alexander Buckland will speak about his history of a local Native American tribe, "The Wiechquaeskeck Indians of Southwestern Connecticut."
  • Don Klotz, longtime Wilton resident, will talk about his recently published "On Hell's Perimeters: Pacific Tales of PBY Patrol Squadron 23 in WWII" on Thursday, November 14th at 7:00 p.m.
  • Popular children's author Cari Best will celebrate Book Time at the Wilton Library on Friday, November 15th from 4-6 p.m. A light supper will be served and books will be available for sale.
  • "Lost Knights: A Journey to Fatherhood" recounts author Dickon Pownall-Gray's experience as a stay-at-home dad who gave up the corporate life to be with his kids and will be the subject of his talk on Sunday, November 17th, at 2:00 p.m.
Book Discussions for Kids
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mothers and Daughters (3rd & 4th grade) Book Voyagers will discuss "Amber Brown Goes Fourth" by Paula Danziger on November 7th and "Ramona Quimby, Age 8" by Beverly Cleary on November 21st. This wonderful program is funded by the Connecticut Council for the Humanities, the Southern Connecticut Library Council, the Fairfield County Community Foundation, and the Library. Advance registration is required and sessions will be from 4-5 p.m.

... And Adults!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wilton Library Readers will discuss Pat Barker's "Regeneration Trilogy" under the popular leadership of Susan Boyar at noon on Wednesday, November 13th. Find out why the books - and the discussion leader - are so well regarded by joining this growing group.
Ben Van Vechten will explore the techniques and topics of several authors with the final 3 parts of his 5-part series on short stories 10:30-noon on Thursdays November 7th, 14th, and 21st.
By the way, if you are a member of a local book discussion group, be sure to let the Library know in advance what books you will be reading. We'll buy additional copies of books available in paperback and add them to our new "Book Group Books" collection just behind the Reference Desk. Ask any reference librarian about this exciting new program.
Parents' Workshop on Reading Success
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Early reading success will be the topic of a talk lead by Marjorie B. Gills, language therapist and co-founder of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities. There is no charge for the November 6th (7:30 pm) program, but advance registration is required.

Local Businesses Get Behind the Library!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To celebrate its own anniversary, Wilton Center Travel is sponsoring a cruise in June, 2003 (on the Crystal Cruises line) to the Baltic area to benefit the Library's Building Fund. The details of the trip will be available to all who call Wilton Center Travel at 762-2552 or who visit the Library on November 10th at 2:00 for a presentation by Judy White. Thanks, Judy, for thinking of us.
As a gesture of goodwill and in support of reading and education in Wilton, half the opening day proceeds from our new Outback Steakhouse will benefit the Library's Building Fund. Stop by on November 11th for the restaurant's first day of operation in Gateway Shopping Center on Danbury Road and know that you'll have a wonderful meal and help us toward our goal. Thank you, Jeff Hardy and the folks at Outback.
Stop by the Library to buy your own Tom E Toes Debit Card! For every $25 you spend, $1 will go to each of the following organizations: The Wilton Library, the Teen Center, and the American Cancer Society. Your next delicious meal at the restaurant (or your take out or delivery order) will taste even better when you know you are funding such worthy causes!
Who Moved My Cheese? with Michael Crystal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Wilton Chamber of Commerce and the Library co- sponsor a seminar on managing change based on the classic book by Spencer Johnson and led by Michael Crystal, Ph.D. "Who Moved My Cheese" is a humorous and insightful look at the stress caused by change and how to deal with it. The seminar will be held from 9:00-11:15 a.m. at the Library and will cost $39.95 for Chamber members and $49.95 for non-members. Call the Library (762-3950) or the Chamber (762-0567) for more information.
