Greetings!
Our apologies to those of you who may be receiving our October newsletter for the second time. We have been having some problems with our mailing list software and suspect that most of you have not been receiving your issues of librarEmail. We have contracted with a new mailing service and hope to have everything back on track now.
Expansion
News!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Representatives of the Library Board of Trustees appeared before
the Board of Selectmen on September 17th to present the latest information
on the Library's planned expansion. President Judy Higby, Future Committee
Chair Kathy Welling, Building Committee Chair Malcolm Whyte and Director
Kathy Leeds presented the first phase of the private public partnership
proposal and answered questions posed by the selectmen. A standing room
only audience of supporters and interested parties were treated to the
premier of the Library's video about the expansion, as well - thanks
to award winning videographer Danny Tepper, who produced the 10-minute
show probono. If you would like to see the most recent plans or would
like to view the video yourself - or if you would like to arrange for
us to come speak to your organization or company about the plans, please
call me (762-3950) or e-mail (kcleeds@wiltonlibrary.org) or just stop
by!
Computer
Classes at the Library Resume
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There will be two new hands on computer classes taught during
the month of October by our own computer guru and newspaper columnist,
Mary Anne Franco. On Wednesday, October 2nd, from 8:30-10 am, Mary Anne
will teach her students intermediate level Internet skills and on Wednesday,
October 16th, from 8:30 to 10 am, she will introduce basic Microsoft
Word skills.
Students should register in advance as space is limited and there is a fee of $15 for Friends of the Library and $20 for others (proceeds help to fund future programs). Come benefit from these user friendly learning sessions before hours in the Reference Area of the Library.
Focus
'02 Photography Show
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Wilton Arts Council Annual Juried Photography Show will hang
in the Library's exhibition space for the entire month of October. An
opening reception for the public will take place Friday, October 4th
from 6-7:30 pm, so please stop by to see the entries and celebrate the
creativity of our community once again.
Food
for Thought is a Great Success!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks to the generosity of Wilton Motors, the 4-part Food for
Thought seminar series has gotten off to a resounding start in September
with talks by authors Jane & Michael Stern and author and restaurateur
Carol Peck of the Good News Cafe in Woodbury. Coming up in October are
the final two episodes in the series: On Sunday, October 6th, popular
and knowledgeable lecturer from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Joan Kaskell
will speak about food and table settings in art, and on Sunday, October
27th, cooking school owner Sally Maraventano will discuss restaurants
and foods of Rome (Sally will just have returned from a cooking trip
to Italy). Both sessions will be held in the Community Room from 2-3
pm and advance registration is suggested because of high demand.
Alert
for Teens and Their Parents
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
College planning experts Howard and Matthew Greene will share
their advice with us once again in the latest College Planning Series
session entitled "Planning for College Admissions - Guidelines for Sophomores,
Juniors, and Seniors" on Wednesday, October 9 from 7-8:30 pm in the Picture
Book Room of our Children's Services wing. The popularity of the College
Planning Series at the Library necessitates our holding this session
in an area bigger than our Community Room! Attendees will receive lots
of valuable advice and free pizza provided by our corporate sponsor,
Tom-E-Toes. Advance registration is required so that we can provide everyone
with a seat and a slice!
