Expansion
News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Library will be closed to regular business for three days
this month so that we can transform (and then untransform) the interior
and grounds for our gala weekend. Wouldn't it be wonderful if just
the flick of a wand could turn us into a medieval forest, banquet hall
and faire grounds! Instead, it will take dozens of staff members and
volunteers to move shelving, materials and equipment inside and a cast
of just as many to pitch the 50' x 100' tent that will completely fill
our back parking lot outside.
The work will begin Thursday with the arrival of the tent. Patrons are welcome
to come in to use the Library, although parking will be limited to the front
lot or elsewhere in the Center during the day. No Library materials will be
due during the period that the Library is closed and no fees will be charged
for these three days. Patrons are urged to use the drop box in the parking
lot for Friday, Saturday and Sunday if necessary for their own convenience,
but to consider keeping materials over the gala weekend and return them when
we reopen on Monday
On Friday and Saturday, work crews will work to empty the lobby and
magazine/reference areas of materials so the incredible decorations
for the cocktail reception and silent auction can be installed. Caterers
and volunteers will work in the tent as well, creating a fabulous medieval
banquet hall for the gala dinner, dancing and live auction. Saturday
night and Sunday crews will rearrange the decor to make the Library
the site of a medieval faire, with games, crafts, the Wilton Idol contest,
food and more for the whole family. We will work well into the night
Sunday night to restore the Library to normal -- though the tent will
remain in the parking lot for part of the following day. Monday at
10 we will be back in business and ready to serve as a Library once
again.
We'll ask patrons to understand that this three-day interruption in Library
service will help us to raise significant funds for our future transformation
- the wonderful expansion and renovation that comes closer with each passing
day!
Art Exhibits
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Through Saturday, September 13, the wonderful exhibit, "Capturing
the Essence of Time and Place," by Len Freas featuring landscapes in
oils and watercolors will continue at the Library. The exhibit will
change mid- month to celebrate our gala weekend with contributed and
commissioned art by more than 30 select local artists. We are most
grateful to them for their very special support of the Library's expansion
project and look forward to brisk bidding (at the gala's silent auction)
and plentiful sales throughout the month and until Friday, October
24th. An opening reception will be held at the Library from 6-8 pm
on Thursday, September 25th - please join us that evening to thank
them all and shop a bit!

Book
Talks for Fall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ben Van Vechten is back - this time with a series on what he
considers the greatest novels of the 20th century: "The Good Soldier," "The
Great Gatsby," "Call It Sleep," and "The Invisible Man." Join him on
Thursday mornings from 10:30 to noon in the Community Room, September
4, 11, 18, 25, and October 2 for lively discussion about the authors
and their works. All titles are available in the Library's collection
or for purchase at the Circulation Desk.
Jane Stern, the wonderfully entertaining author (with her husband, Michael)
of "Road Food" and other culinary treats, will join us to talk about her experiences
as a local EMT and solo author of the book "Ambulance Girl," published this
summer. She'll be at the Library Sunday, September 14th at 2 pm and will be
available to sign copies of the book after her talk.
Susan Boyar and the Wilton Library Readers will tackle the wonderful
novel, "Life of Pi," by Yann Martel on Wednesday, September 10th from
noon to 1 pm. Susan is a masterful facilitator and well worth joining
for a discussion of this deceptively simple work.
And finally, our Senior Center Book discussion for the month will be led by
Sandy Clockedile. Sandy will talk about "The Lobster Chronicles," by Linda
Greenlaw starting at 11 am at Comstock Community Center.
Bob
Russell's Wilton History
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bob's terrifically well-received talks on the history of our
town will continue at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 24th. This time,
he will cover Wilton's last 75 years - so the stories may hit a bit
closer to home. If you haven't been able to attend before, do yourself
a favor and come to hear about the individuals and incidents that have
shaped our little hamlet... he's sure to throw in a scandal or two
to spice the historic stew! Bob Russell is Wilton's former First Selectman
and will soon publish his own history of the town.
