Stock Market Game

stock0907.jpg

This one goes out to all of our budding tycoons and captains of industry:

Monday, October 1, through Monday, December 3, 4-5 pm.
First session 4-5:30 pm. No session October 8. In this 9-week program, teens learn about the world of high finance using the real stock market, a real-time portfolio with a live trading simulation and "not so real" currency. For kids in grades 7-12. Teams of 2-4 kids compete with other teams around the country. Library resources utilized (print and electronic) to make their investment decisions. The library's own in-house stock market guru, Michael McEneaney, gives the students on-going guidance. Game endorsed by the national Council on Economic Education. Advance registration required (in teams). Made possible by the John and Patricia Curran Teen Fund. Space limited.

Don't forget to wear a button down shirt and a tie...just kidding!!

Did you catch the VMA's?

MTV_patch.jpg

OK, I admit I didn't watch it, but I had a real good excuse (I swear) but I did catch the highlights the next day and must say I was not disappointed. People performed more or less as expected (I'm looking at you Britney!!) and there were a few happy surprises as well, like the performance by Miss Alicia Keys, I also think Sarah Silverman delivered the funny. If you missed it like I did you can see it all on MTV.com and if you have any thoughts about any of this you can add them in our comments section right here. You guys know we like to hear from you right?

New Movies!

night09-07.jpg

And by "new" I mean new to our collection because one of them is the classic horror film Night of the Living Dead. George Romero knew zombies were hot way back in 1968 and his film has been forever locked into the horror hall of fame with his edgy directing style and zombie flesh eating. I can honestly say it has set the standard for what we expect from zombies ever since. We are getting in the spirit of Halloween early and have also added Lady in the Water, and The Ring, so stop by and take them out, make some popcorn, and then scare the pants off yourself, or maybe host your own zombie party, it'll be fun I promise!

Banned Books Week

"I am opposed to any form of tyranny over the mind of man."
Thomas Jefferson

"We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people." John F. Kennedy

In the last week of September, the American Library Association likes to take the time to acknowledge our first amendments rights by highlighting the books that have been challenged over the course of history. Many of these books like The Catcher in the Rye, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451 have gone on to become classic literature, and the staples of high school reading lists. We are all capable of accepting that which is mediocre and does not challenge us in any way but we will never grow from it, and in the spirit of this idea stop in and take out a banned book and we will let you choose another from our basket that you can keep for yourself.
